I see users posting about their macbooks and referring to them as Penryn or Santa Rosa or whatever it is, same goes with different display manufacturers.

How do I find out which models of hardware I have?

System Profiler will tell you if you're running Mac OS X. You can find it in /Applications/Utilities.

MacBookPro1,1 = 15 / 17" First generation with Core Duo (Yonah 32-bit) processors.

MacBookPro2,1 = 15" second generation with Core 2 Duo processors (Merom CPUs with Napa refresh chipset)

MacBookPro2,2 = 17" second generation with Core 2 Duo processors (Merom CPUs with Napa refresh chipset)

MacBookPro3,1 = 15 / 17" third generation with Core 2 Duo processors (Merom CPUs with Santa Rosa chipset).

MacBookPro4,1 = 15 / 17" fourth generation with Core 2 Duo processors (Penryn CPUs with Santa Rosa chipset).
