How do i apply subtitles that i downloaded?

Hello there!
I just bought this DVD, and when i opened it up i find out that it had no danish subtitles.
I asked my friend and he told me to go to a site called www.opensubtitles.org and download the the subtitles.. Is this illegal?
And i got this folder now, so how to i apply the subtitles to my movie?
