OK, i wrote this post out about three times, and after some overly complicated questions about video resolutions and aspect ratios ( i was confusing myself) i decided to simplify my question:

i normally convert my totally legitimate videos of various resolutions using the quicktime export function (to iphone .m4v file) Now thats fine until i want the nicest crispest image to fill the screen. Whats the best way / program to use so that i can either:

a) scale and crop my videos optimally during export to exactly 480 x 320?

b) just manually control the scaled resolution of the video (in its original aspect ratio) to whatever res i bloody well feel like?

An answer to a) would be preferred, since some files i want to get rid of black bars that have been encoded into the file.

any help is much appreciated!

thanks i'll repost there, any admins, feel free to nuke this thread ...
