can't sync with itunes w/o internet access?

living in a place now where i can't always get internet access. connected iphone to mbp once to sync when i didn't have internet access and when itunes came up, it said it couldn't connected to the itunes store and just gave me a blank window with the word iphone in background.

so i can't sync my iphone with itunes unless i can connect to the itunes store? i don't remember this happening before upgrading to 7.6.2.
