iMac and Office 2008 Cant load Word or Update

Help!! Am having major headaches with my new iMac and Mac Office 2008. Spent a load of cash to come away from crappy Vista only to find that the Mac/Office union is even worse! My Office 2008 loads (PP, Excel, Ent etc) although Word refuses to. Then the Mac Office update refuses to execute saying that the Office 2008 (12.0) is not compatible with the upgrade (12.1)..Have tried reloading, rebooting etc...no change

Can anybody advise? Mac and Msoft have gone silent on me..:mad:
