External Hard Drive Shut Down

I just bought a 500GB external hard drive for time machine and storage, I plugged it in and it's working great. Now to shut it off, do I just eject it and turn off the power button on the external drive? Or is there more to it? Sorry for the n00bish question, just want to be sure.:rolleyes:
