Hi everyone,

I am thinking about buying a Time Capsule for continous onsite backup as well as easy sharing of some files within my network.

After reading quite a bit I understand that it is easily possible to restrict access to certain folders (or partitions?) to only specific users whilst also maintaining a shared area which can be accessed by anyone on the network. Is this correct?

Also it appears that I can plug as many third party HDDs into the USB ports as I want and use them just as if they were the HDD integrated into the device. E.g. I will be able to use them as a Time Machine target or simply share them on the network. Is this also correct? Has anybody tried using this as a poor man's RAID 1? Can I span a partition over multiple drives and have 2 500GB drives act as one big 1TB Time Machine target?

And finally to the topic that I am the most interested in yet failed to find anything reliable about during my web searches: can I encrypt everything that is dumped into my time capsule?

For years now I have never written anything but music onto unencrypted partitions. Backing up unencrypted would be the equivalent of printing out all of my files and neatly taping them together so as to make it most convenient to any burglar walking out of my house with years worth of financial, medical and professional history (including many confidential files of my clients). Oh and I probably also wouldn't feel comfortable about some portions of my iPhoto library turning up on the internet..

Needless to say that my home directories are FileVault'ed and I would expect some similar functionality to be present in Time Machine. Alternatively whole drive encryption would do..

Thanks in advance for your insight!
- Niels.
