How is this not a security issue?

After doing an upgrade install of Leopard on my Powerbook G4, all of my accounts lost administrator access.

A google search sent me to MacRumors (should have searched here first), and the MacRumors post sent me here, which solved my problem.

My question, though, is how is this not a security issue? Should it scare me that anyone with an OSX install disk can get root access to my machine? What good is having a password, then?
 
I guess we have to assume that type of intimate contact with your computer is out of the reach of any system protection mechanism.
 
I guess that makes sense. And I'm glad that there is an option like this in case something like this happens during an upgrade, though.

I guess I'd always imagined that if my laptop were stolen the thief would have to be some sort of encryption expert to break my password. Didn't imagine that popping an in an install disk would do the trick.

I think I'm going to turn on filevault.
