New plan, new phone - activate phone first?

I took out a new AT&T plan with a freebie phone as a back up. I just received it in the mail.

I have also purchased an iphone separately.

Do I need to activate the new phone that I just received, or can I put the SIM card straight into the iphone? I would rather leave the new phone 'new in the box' if I can.

Thank you in advance for any help on this matter.
