Alternatives to 'ScreenRecycler'?

In case you're unaware, there's a software program called Screen Recycler that basically links up the LCD screens from multiple computers, aka a dead or unused laptop as a secondary external screen to extend your desktop. However, I was wondering if there's any free work arounds, hardware or software wise. I dunno, it seems like kind of a waste to spend more money on something old to use it instead of just pawning it off or giving it away. Thanks,
