My friend told me he saw somewhere about this new 500GB 5400 (i think) laptop hard drive for sale. He does not remember where he saw it, does anyone know where i can buy one?

I could be wrong but I think it's two platters stacked on top of each other, and as such it's too big to fit into a MacBook or MacBook Pro, which presumably is what you'd want it for. The drive needs to be 9.5mm for either machine — the biggest so far is 320GB. I think 500GB drives in that size are due late Q2/Q3.

Hitachi have one but its too thick for a macbook/pro/most laptops I'm guessing, however apparently (don't quote me on it) it does fit into a 17" Macbook Pro.

Samsung are coming out with one which is normal size, so just hold on, itsa coming ;)

Yet to see a 500 GB hardrive which is small enough to fit into a MacBook Pro...

Sorry this may sound a bit blaintantly obvious, but:

... the Apple Online Store ... ? .... Time Capsule ....? Thats a hard drive with 500GB and for laptops .....

I don't think they are on the market yet. Supposed to be closer to the end of the year.

All the large laptop hard drives (250GB, 320GB) already have 2 platters and at 9.5mm all fit into MacBooks and MacBook Pros.

The new 500GB laptop drives have 3 platters. Hitachi's, at 12.5mm, is too thick to fit in all but the 17" MacBook Pro.

Samsung just released (to computer manufacturers only, for now) a 3 platter 500GB laptop drive that they managed to squeeze down to 9.5mm. So this will fit 15" and smaller MacBooks.

If the samsung disk is supposed to be shipping from march, where the f@*k is it!?!?

I need one quickly! :D

Lots of incorrect info in this thread. The Samsung Spin Point M6 is a 3 platter 500gb laptop hard drive, it is 9.5 mm high and will fit into a MacBook Pro, it hasn't hit retail channels yet, was supposed to start shipping at the end of March. Hopefully it's coming real soon.

So any new news on this 500GB internal HDD? I want one so that I can put one in my Macbook and another in my PS3.

OWC has some 320GB if nothing else.

Yeah 320GB laptop drives are pretty common now, but I figure if the Samsung 500GB is already OUT there and is just waiting to be released to the general public I might as well wait. But it was shipped to businesses in March and it's almost September so how much longer do you think we have to wait?

Holy crap! What do you intend to do with your PS3 that makes you want to put a 500GB in it?!

Anyways, here's the link to the 500GB harddrives: http://eshop.macsales.com/search/samsung+m6

Does anyone know it compares (speed-wise) to a 320GB 7200RPM drive?

LOL. Hey man, you never know. Lots of demos, movies, music, game installs, etc. I plan on keeping my PS3 for years and years so it's worth it to me.

And btw, these are Do It Yourself kits - are they easy to do? Not very familiar with anything related to computers.

Well they sell the bare drive itself, but I recommend getting the DIY kit so you can put your old hard drive in an external enclosure to use for other things.

If you're not familiar with computers as much as replacing components of them, you probably shouldn't try replacing the hard drive, there are guides on how to replace the hard drive but if you mess something up that could mean a voided warranty.

Have a look at this guide for replacing your hard drive in your Macbook, if it seems difficult then don't try it :D (http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/MacBook-Core-2-Duo/Hard-Drive-Replacement/116/5/).
