Macbook network problem

Did you add a firewall or change firewall settings to your Windows computer? For instance I use Zonealarm and if I do not okay the IP range of my network it will not show up on any Mac and gives an error when trying to connect to a Mac.

Also are your computers apart of the same workgroup, ie WORKGROUP or MSHOME.

What versions of Windows and OS X are you using? Vista is more troublesome than XP when connecting with Macs.

When a Windows 2000/XP computer starts, if no DHCP server can be found, the computer will assign itself an IP address in the Class B range of 169.254.0.0 with a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0. No gateway or DNS server will be assigned. This process is referred to as "Automatic IP Addressing." It is only used in the instance where a Windows 2000/XP computer is configured for DHCP, and no DHCP server can be located. To determine the problem, try the following:

* Check the Ethernet cable—borrow an Ethernet cable that you know works and try to connect using it.
* Improper LAN Connection Proxy setting:
o Click Start | Control Panel | Internet Options.
o Click the Connections tab.
o Click LAN Settings at the bottom of the window.
o On the Local Area Network (LAN) settings window, UNCHECK all items currently checked.
o Reboot the computer.
* Check the Ethernet port.
o Call the Help Desk at 831-6000 to check if a port is disabled.

That info will help narrow down a few of the possible issues.

Another thing that may help:
To configure a folder and all the files in it to be shared folder(s) on a network, follow these steps:
1. Right-click the folder, and then click Sharing and Security
2. Click to select the Share this folder on the network check box, and then click OK.
Local NTFS Permissions:
• Owner: Full Control
• Administrators: Full Control
• System: Full Control
• Everyone: Change
Network Share Permissions:
• Everyone: Full Control

However, this can also be tricky because remote users and local users may not necessarily mean "network" users - at least, in some cases, not the same network you are referring to. Microsoft is not known for making this process easy for their customers, which you now know.
