sim card current phone into iPhone?

if you have a phone with att service can you buy an iPhone and use your current sim card?
 
My plan is to do exactly that. Buy it, activate/jailbreak it (don't think you have to unlock it?) then put in my old sim, and turn off EDGE so I don't have to pay for data and can use my current plan. But maybe someone with actual experience can comment.
