i know this is likely suicidal profit wise for mac but this is what i think mac should do.
make a low-end cheaper! mac line-up-
-bring back the ibook as the low-end laptop.
-make the mac mini actually affordable, or replace it with something a little bigger and use desktop parts instead of laptop so it is down under 500! mac cube comeback!
-make the top end of this low-end line up the mystical headless mac! full tower desktop (powermac G4 tower size or slightly smaller) PCI/AGP one optical disk drive, room for 2 or 3 HDDs, up to 4gb ram atleast!
i dont really care what processors they use to make these, as long as they are up to date, the ibook should not impose on the macbook in power but should be the low low-end option many people want! i am contemplating a ibook G4 because i just need a portable web surfer and log and capture on the fly, no heavy lifting.
mac 'cube'- super low end but gets the job done for people that dont need heavy computing power but want the peace of mind of owning a mac with applecare! people should not have to buy used stuff just to get a second computer.
headless mac- comparable speed-wise to the current top-end mac mini and low end imac. very expandable and customizable, all i want out of a desktop i could probably get out of an imac, but i dont like being constrained to 1 monitor, and 1 hard drive, and not being able to change my set up on a whim.
i currently use a powermac G4, powerhouse for a 5-6 yr old computer but aging and showing it, i dont want a G5 because it is still powerpc and i want intel because with time, more things wont be universal binary and i dont want those restrictions on my software. i dont want an imac because right now i have 5 internal HDDs and 1 external and i like having the security of internal RAID set up and not having 1 drive to worry about crashing, and i dont think getting an external is a viable option, who wants more stuff plugged in?
i think this line, would not only encourage more people to switch to macs, but encourage old mac users to by new macs instead used ones, and just make everyone that much happier with apple!
sorry i babbled on but it just kept coming.
