Kernel Panic (10.5.2)

I'm using an iMac 1.83ghz Intel Core Duo running Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.2, This kernel panic happen real randomly like perhaps once a week but ALWAYS when i do the same thing, I do some adjustments to high res images in photoshop CS3 then once i want to save the darkened screen drops down with the box telling me to restart in a number of languages.

Here is the report i got once i restarted my iMac;

This looks like it is related to Spotlight indexing.

You may want to do the following:

1 Boot from the DVD that came with your computer, go under the menus (I think it is called Utilities, run Disk Utility, Select your Volume Name (under the actual disk), then the tab for Disk First Aid and run Repair Disk Permissions, Verify Disk (if it comes up with errors, run Repair Disk).

After that boot normally and without running any applications, have Spotlight re-index the disk by doing the following:

1. Launch System Preferences and select the Spotlight Pane.
2. Click on the Privacy tab
3. Select your volume and delete it (use the "-" button)
4. Now add your volume back (use the "+" button)
5. Quit System Preferences

This may take a few hours to re-index your entire Volume. You can monitor the progress using Activity Monitor (processes are called mds and mdworker). Once Spotlight is finished re-indexing the mds process should go away.

Then see if the problem happens again.
 
Thanks, I'll let you know if it happens again. hopefully this has fixed it :)

damnit ! It went so long without one of these again, I must admit i did indeed just get a power-cut literally 30 mins before hand, seemed to happen exactly like before once i saved an image, anyone got any ideas how this one has popped up?

I am just guessing now...

Photoshop is a memory hog.

How much memory do you have installed?

Also, how much free space do you have on your boot disk?

When you open an image, it is loaded into a temporary swap space on your disk if you don't have enough memory. When you save it (the hi rez image), the OS has to read it from swap and write it to disk. This cause disk thrashing (read/write/read/write). At the same time, spotlight (mds process) is trying to index it (again causing thrashing). Maybe this is what is causing your problem, depending on the size (in MBs or GBs) of the image you are working on.

You may want to try the following:

1. Upgrade your memory
2. Use an external disk to open, edit and save your images, and disable it from Spotlight indexing.
3. Remove the Adobe CSS plist file in your home directory/Library/Preferences.

Other than that, I have no clue as to why mds is crashing your system. You may want to talk to an Apple 2nd level engineer and send them the crash log and exactly what you were doing (every time) when the panic occurred.

Photoshop won't be hogging the memory, but a Scratch disc will help you.
unfortunatly PS is limited to how much RAM it can use, in its performance settings i think it dedicates 70% memory to use, you can change this to 90% if your not running many apps at the same time, plus set up a scratch, they work well.
Don't remove the Adobe CSS plist file.

You mentioned a power cut, I Presume your using a surge protector? Only a few $'s but it will stop power surges which can cause a kernal panic?
Kernal panics are usually hardware related, but worst case scenario is re-install the OS, no big thing, but it should cure the problem. :)

Right, kernel panics generally are caused by hardware issues. So how can a reinstall cure a hardware problem?

I endorse the advice you are getting from merl1n, with one addition. I'd suspect a RAM issue. Have you added any?

your right IJ Reilly about what i wrote, thanks for picking that up sir, ;)

but what i ment to say was, on another thread on the www i read about a similar problem whilst using photoshop, with a very similar panic report, and after as you correctly say the RAM was checked to be seated correctly and a few various other things the poster of the thread did a clean install of the OS, and as if by magic things are running sweet, and have been for a good while so it looks like the re-install cured the problem, but that may have been a one off :eek: and not the case here.

you will gain from adding more RAM using photoshop, then make sure you only have 80% dedicated in your PS prefs for reasonable performance. Also look into using a scratch disk :)
