Sorry guys, but this has been irking me a bit. How do you pronounce "matte?" As in "matte finish for the MBP screen?" Is it:

a) Mah - Tay (Like Latte, but with an "M")
b) Mat (Like the thing we have on the floor)

I've never heard anyone referring to it as A. Not on UK or US TV or anywhere else abroad.

B here!

Im originally from Kent,we pronounce things properly there

:D In my defence, I don't live in Portsmouth itself, but I'm close enough to experience the remarkable feat of dropping letters at the beginning and end of words.

That's nearly carrot crunching and i've got a brand new combine harvester oo rrraayyy country, your a bumpkin

EDIT: OMG, just looked at the time it's nearly 1.00pm im off for a pint or 4

Wow, apparently I'm crazy.

I've always pronounced it (in my head, I've never actually had to say it out loud...) "mah tay", and that's made perfect sense to me.

I mean, if latte is "lah tay", then matte should be "mah tay" right? Apparently not...

I guess it's kinda like why "go" sounds completely different from "to" and "do".

It's definitely pronounced like the name "Matt."

Mah-tay is the Japanese word for "stop/cease" :)

Blurb23: Check out this comedian named Ghallagher, he does a good routine about rhyming (or not) words in English...

"c-o-m-b, comb! t-o-m-b, 'tome? NO! toom!'"

As everyone has said it is Mat/Matt as in "matte finish" as opposed to "glossy" as in paint terms - ie dull (non reflective) as opposed to shiny.

But as we all know, a Mac can NEVER be dull ;)

Here in Australia we pronounce it "matt" but follow it with "ya mongrel bastard, right who wants a beer?"
