Time Machine error

Im using Time Machine throught my AirPort Extreme, this morning I got the error "The backup disk image could not be mounted." Anyone know how to fix this?
 
I use it through usb but I've had the same problem a few times. Unplugging it and restarting/messing has got it to work a few times but I've had to reformat the drive and resetup time machine twice now (and loose everything...)
