So on the left side of finder are little icons for like "Music" and "Photos". I am using a NAS to share music, videos and pictures to all my computers. i was able to easily make my Windows default locations point to the NAS folders... but how do I make these folders on the Mac finder point to the NAS locations?

By dragging them into that area, which is probably even easier than whatever the Windows way might be.

You'll find "Drag and Drop" to be a much more substantial and fundamental aspect of the Mac OS than it is on Windows.

  • How do you send files in iChat? Drag them in.
  • How do you attach files to email in Mail.app? Drag them in.
  • Mount disk images in Disk Utility? Drag them in.
  • Save images from Safari? Drag them out.
  • Create copies of iTunes music on desktop? Drag them out.
  • Import image into Pages? Drag them in.
  • Add/remove items in Dock? Drag them in/out.
  • Easily copy and paste snippet of text from one app to another? Drag it.
  • Add music to Garage Band? Drag it in.
  • Movies to Keynote? Drag them in.
  • etc...

Note that this generally only works with authentic Cocoa apps... aka not stuff that doesn't follow the rules like Firefox.

So how do I give them the pretty little icons rather than the ordinary ones?

I want them to REPLACE/OVERWRITE the existing links in there, not co-exist with them...

Make them the icon of the original folder. You can copy and paste icons from the Get Info window. Right Click -> Get Info. But those will end up being just the folder icons with a musical note or what have you superimposed.

That's not how it works.
