Backing up OS - how ?

I'm a bit of a newbie on the mac and wanted to store an 'image' of the entire OS 10.4.11 onto a DVD so if I replace the hard disc I can just restore this 'image' off the DVD,

Carbon Copy seems to clone a hard disc to another easily, but that doesn't help if the hard didc source is corrupt or broken !

I'm totally lost in the sea of opportunity ! *LOL*

I wanted to do this before my datafiles get massive !

Any ideas very very welcome !

I have a blank DVD disc and a external firewire burner.

what I don't have is a spare hard disc in a firewire enclosure. (cos the one I have is running the OS I'm using ! *LOL*)

So its economics !

I can clone hard drives with a proven bit copier G4L for example easily, but wow is it expensive !

It's preventative. for 10 years I've always 'imaged' my OS for recovery should I ever need it !

And guess what, I've needed that to recover from disaster a lot more than once with those images!

But find I can't do it with the iMac, cos I don't know how. (Same with Linux - so I bit image the hard disc onto a new one but as I use 320GB hard discs it has got very expensive)

So the OS is AOK for now. (Only upgraded cos the 10.3 one was hopelessly corrupt and became unstable. With no back up ! *LOL* Its not my iMac but my nearest and dearests -Ouch if it goes wrong !)

SuperDuper seems to be the favorite.

I've downloaded both. Chrono is US$30.00 shareware and seems to download to external Cds ? Ok

Is Time Machine suitable and how do you get it for 10.4 ?
