Assistance Needed With Dock - Accidentally Removed Item

Hi all.. I just purchased my wife a MacBook yesterday - switching her from Windows.. As she was getting accustomed to things, she accidentally removed DOCUMENTS and DOWNLOADS from the Dock. I managed to get DOCUMENTS back where it expands when you click it, but DOWNLOADS doesn't expand. It just opens Finder. What did I do wrong?

It opens in Finder if its empty.

If you right click the Downloads folder does it say view contents as: Stack ?

Thank you! All taken care of. It was because the folder was empty.
