Its taking forever to empty trash, can't stop!

So I needed to clear up some space on my external. I decided to trash some stuff I didn't need, about 40GB or so.

But its been forever since I tried to empty the trash. I did some research, and made sure secure empty trash wasn't on. I can't even cancel.
Its only about 1,400 files. I checked activity monitor and disk usage is at 9.9MB/sec. and the progress bar hasn't been progressing _at_all_. :(

Any ideas? Leopard 10.5.2 btw.
