i am running a 1TB TC and want to check the speed of my wireless network. Where do I check this? How do I maximize the speed of my TC.

Option/Alt click on the AirPort icon in the menu bar and check the Transmit Rate, which is shown in Mbps.
But normally you should get around 6 to 7MB/s, you can try transferring a file and look at Activity Monitor > Network Activity or iStat Menu/Pro.
