I've been having this problem for a while now and I have no idea what caused it, but for some reason there are duplicates in the "Open With" menu and it's kind of annoying.

I've tried deleting the *.plist in my preferences and that hasn't helped. I've searched far and wide and can't figure out for the life of me how to fix this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This seems to be a widespread issue is Mac OS X Snow Leopard. Many have reported it before.

What .plist file did you remove? Have you tried reinstalling the latest combo updater?

"com.apple.LaunchServices" was the .plist that I had heard to delete.

I haven't done that yet, but I'll give it a shot. I have had this problem before 10.6.3 if that makes any difference.

I had the same problem. Removing the plist for launch services did not help.

Recently I was using Onyx to run some maintenance and somewhere I saw a setting for resetting app bindings of some sort. I believe it cleared up my problem. Give it a try. I'll check later and see if I can find the location of a setting that may help.

update:

I believe this worked for me.

In Onyx

Cleaning tab

"User" menu

"Delete the Cache"
"Applications"

I reset a lot more caches so I cannot verify if the Applications cache deletion clears the duplicates. I just know that my dupes went away after running a battery of tasks.

Update for the record

Had this same problem and got tired of dealing with duplicates for tons of apps. Found the current solution...Onyx, but not where the previous guy mentioned. It's in Onyx under Maintenance-->Rebuild-->Launch Services
Works like a charm, the description in the Onyx Help menu actually specifically tells you it fixes duplicate apps and such. Cleaned me up good. Fixed the issue completely. Nice and tidy now.

Cheers, hope this helps somebody out there.
