My computer has a problem. If I bring it into the Apple Store, will they let me exchange it for a different MBP or do they usually force you into a direct replacement?

D. More information needed

Did you just buy it? Are you still within the 14 day window? Have you had the machine for a while and it's having issues?

If you've had it for a while (within a year) or have applecare (within 3 years) they'll only replace your machine after they fix 3 major things (logic board, display). If it's your first time you'll get your old machine with a replaced part.

As Eddyisgreat said, we need more information.
Is it Logic Board, Motherboard (such as Wi-Fi, Speaker, Processor, RAM, etc), Trackpad, Keyboard, or dead pixel?
All these problems will be solved if is still in 14 days (as Eddyisgreat mentioned), and if it's not, then it depends on the person you meet. Store Manager would likely to help, but if it was sum sales man, then not most likely.
