After you have downloaded firmware 2.1, and run your phone all the way down, plug it in and then in the first 15 minutes that it is charging, go to settings, general, usage, and take a screen shot. It will say "charging" on the screen, but it will also say "time since last full charge." :)

Wow! It's been nine hours since this thread was started, and no one else has posted a usage screen shot. Is everyone else's battery still going? Am I the only person that only got 8 hours of usage?

Here's mine...

I think I got about another hour of usage after 2.1. I did a lot of youTube watching, and streamed a lot of online radio to see how fast I could drain the battery. The pic was snapped about 2 minutes before my phone died after a day of non-stop use.

My battery is at 84% after 1 phone call, 34 minutes of usage, and 6 hours standby. That's much worse than 2.0.2, but I realized location services was on by accident. Normally I have 1 hr of usage before I see a difference in the battery meter.

May I ask how you used your iPhone during these hours? What are your settings? 3G on or off? Location Services? WiFi?

After downloading 2.1, I was surfing the Internet and Mac Rumors for about two hours and emailing screen shots. I went to http://testmyiphone.com/ a few times. During that time, I spent about 10 minutes using the iPod. Then standby for several hours. Then I used maps without GPS intermittently for about 30 minutes (at stoplights and parking lots while driving). Then at a restaurant, I used the internet and SMS a little. When I got back home, while watching the news on television, I did a few Google and Wikipedia searches. Went to sleep, woke up. Made a phone call. Organized calendar, contacts, and notes for about an hour. So really, I would say it's mixed usage, but no GPS, no Youtube. Normally, I would have used Youtube (music videos) more often, and GPS for a few minutes, but on this battery run I did not.

Honestly though, if I had used GPS and/or Youtube, I'm sure you could easily cut an hour or two down from the usage time.

Here's another screen shot that I just took. Similar usage to above post.

I posted this in another thread, it's really starting to bug the hell out of me now!

I updated and restored yesterday when the update came out (fresh restore). Went through the rest of the day, stayed up late and let it completely die, went to bed and let it charge freely.

Haven't reset the usage since the restore, everything there except a few mb of data that I used yesterday is what I've used today.

About an hour of iPod usage, 14 minutes of talk, heavy texting (all on edge). The rest is about 20 minutes of surfing and e-mail on 3G (push off).

I used to use push since the update. Edge most of the day, 2 or 3 hours of iPod usage, hour or so of texting, about 30 minutes of talk, and about an hour of surfing on 3G. (All with push on), and would get 20% around 10PM or so.

Now, with the screenshot, like I said, barely any usage at all, and it's close to being dead? And push is even off. Compared to what I usually do on an average day, with this... and my battery is around 25%.

Battery should be calibrated, did it last night, and rebooted a few minutes ago. Like I said in the other posts, suggestions are welcome

You mention both EDGE and 3G. Maybe there is a 3G antenna nearby that your phone never switched to before, but now it's switching back and forth, and that is decreasing your battery life. When I first got my iPhone about six weeks ago, it was on EDGE most of the time and 3G only some of the time. Switching back and forth constantly reduced my battery life. Today, in my area, I'm on 3G 90% of the time. Also, something important to take note of is that playing the iPod consumes a lot of energy! It might not seem like just playing music uses that much energy, but it does. I don't know why a simply music player would, but it does. "20 min surfing and email" - just looking at an already downloaded web page does not consume much power, but any uploading downloading (especially on 3G) consumes a lot of energy. If you are constantly downloading webpages and email, a lot more battery would be consumed than if you only downloaded a few pages and spent most of the time just reading them. Although some of my battery life's have lasted 7 hours, I have had times under heavy usage where it has only lasted 3:30. GPS guzzles energy!!!

I've been seeing a lot better battery life since 2.1

Taken after the 10% warning, and I was even trying to run down the battery.

I'm getting great battery life...iPhone died about 10 minutes after I took this screen shot.

My usage consisted of the following:
50% of total usage time was web browsing (3G used a bit more than wifi in that time), SMS, email, a good amount of Spore Origins (~1 hour), only a couple of short phone calls, lightly used GPS Kit and Google Maps (15 minutes or so), some Jaadu VNC over 3G, Virtual Pool, and a few hours of listening to music while doing work.

Auto-brightness was on and hovering around 35-40%, bluetooth off.

I'm very pleased with the 2.1 update -- before I was getting around 5.5-6 hours with the same usage.

:)

I was having some lower battery performance but fixed it doing the following.

1. Soft-Reset your phone by holding both the power and home buttons until the phone goes black and when you see the apple logo (then release both buttons).
2. Once phone has powered back up turn your phone off by pressing and holding the power button on the top and then sliding to power down. Leave phone in the off position for 10 minutes.
3. Then plug phone into charger (connected to the wall outlet). The power from the wall outlet will turn your phone on. This will also reset some battery statistics in your phone (at least that is what someone from apple told me).

this stuff doenst show anything anymore because u can put a partial charge and keep going, those stats dont reset until the phone has a FULL recharge... i could keep doin partial charges and have it say like 9 days since last full recharge lol

Rybold, I'm seeing a huge increase in usage time with 2.1. I'm just waiting for it to die now then I will upload a screenshot! 1 day, 10 hours of standby so far with around 5 hours of usage. More later...

If you did this it would say, in plain text under the usage, that the iPhone has been plugged in since its last full charge.

Nice try though

Very happy with my battery increase. Before 2.1, I was lucky to get 12 hours standby on a charge with about 3 hours of usage.

Now I have 35 hours standby with around 5 hours of usage:
  • 3G on, Location Services on, WiFi on but "search for networks" off, 2x Fetch email accounts set to check every 15 minutes, 1x Push email account., brightness at around 45%.
  • A fair bit of varied usage - music, web browsing, maps/GPS, email, a few third party apps.

how long have you all had your iphones for? looking at your lifetime call time it looks like you barely talk on the phone!

my battery life has been GREAT since 2.1 and also my 3G...i used to be on 'no service' or 3-4 bars of edge at my apartment. now, 5 bars of 3G! this was taken last night and it lasted until about 1pm today, with 3G, wifi, and playing with apps a bit....so i'm looking good! thanks apple! :D

Look at post #16 above, and notice how it says "iPhone has been plugged in since last full charge."
Now, notice how all the other screen shots DO NOT say that. :)

These stats are essentially meaningless unless we all compare after a full charge and with the data stats reset (these dont automagically reset after a charge). Just my 0.02¢

2.1 Battery Sucks

My biggest issue is that my usage always matches my standby....it seems that something is constantly running.

Any ideas?????:confused::mad::confused::mad::eek:

I'd try a hard reset, by holding the home and power buttons at the same time until the Apple logo appears.

If that doesn't help, you may want to try a full restore.

2.1 3G turned off, everything else turned on. On wi-fi most of the time (home and work), phone calls, games, browsing, a few SMSs. Pretty happy overall.
