27" iMac won't wake from sleep (sometimes)

I am experiencing the same problem on my 2010 i7 iMac. About once a week I must unplug to restart. This just started about 4 weeks ago. I cannot figure out why this is occurring. I guess I will call tech support at apple as it is still under warranty. If I find a resolve I will post.

Add me to the list of people experiencing this problem. Started maybe a couple weeks ago, and only happens once every 5-7 days. Programs I typically leave running include:

iCal, Outlook 2011, Word 2011, Excel 2011, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, iTunes, FontExplorer X Pro, perhaps Safari, Growl's HelperApp...

I'll update that list if I think of anything else. Not sure what is causing it. My coworkers usually have most of those programs running, too, but don't have an issue. I am probably the only one of us who uses iCal and Growl, though.

Happens to me too

It has to be something with the recent updates to Bootcamp. This issue started for me about five weeks ago. What a pain. My machine is 27" 2008 variety.

I had my imac for a week or two before it started doing it as well. I really want to believe it has to do with an update, b/c it was fine for a period of time, then the problem seems to have started after updates. Did a hardware reset, seemed to work for a couple days, but then today, sure enough, back to the problem. Appreciate the feedback though.

Same Issue

I have the same issue with my relatively new 27" iMac and I never turn it off or reboot until this happens. I'm under Apple Care so will also open a ticket.

It happens to me every once in a while (say 1 within a week).

At the moment I only leave the following programs in memory, Safari, Firefox, Chrome, Parrallels (occasionally) and VLC. I do not think it is bluetooth related because I have a usb keyboard plugged in.

I've decided to start recording the times and Mac OS X logs visa /Applications/Utilities/Console.app to see if I can find a pattern.

Hopefully I'll be able to post some results within a few weeks.

Mine does this as well. It is only about two months old.

The iMac will be completely non-responsive. Hitting the power button will not turn it on, holding the power button will not force it to boot... the only thing that seems to work is tapping the power button a few times in a row.

I usually have a few app running. I have iTunes set to always be open (to feed content to the Apple TV), Suitcase Fusion 3 is always running. I use the wireless bluetooth keyboard and magic mouse. The machine also has a 2TB WD drive hooked to it via USB.

Add me to the list. 27" i7 purchased at the end of December. Has there been any update on why this is happening and if there is a way to fix the issue?

I just had the problem yesterday with my brand new i5 machine. I had to hold the power button for 5 seconds and restart. I've had this machine about a week now. First and only time. I have a i3 21.5inch iMac as well and have yet to encounter this. I've had that machine almost six months without issue.

I have this same problem with my i3 21.5 I bought in September. If the machine sleeps for more than 24hrs, it doesnt wake up. Lazy machine. Its really getting annoying now though...I think I will call AppleCare tonight.

I'm pretty sure this has something to do with your keyboard and mouse losing connection during sleep. This seems to be the problem with mine when I have been unable to wake the computer.

A clear sign that it's your keyboard (on mine atleast), is that the CAPS light doe's not work (or stays on all the time) for some unknown reason.

If it is this, then the only solution is to restart your mac.

Go into Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions. As the guy above said, the CAPS LOCK light not working is a dead giveaway that there's some error in the bluetooth connection that needs to be fixed with a restart.

Again...since I repaired disk permissions and reset PRAM I have not had an issue.

Hmmmm...never noticed the CAPS light, great suggestion. Silly question, what do I need to do in order to repair permissions? Is this as simple as clicking 'OK' or is their more involved?

I reset the SMC lastnight as per Apple. However, now it seems that the iMac never wants to sleep. My screen saver comes on, does its thing, then screen goes black and about a minute later the desktop pops up again. If it keeps this up, I won't have to worry about the disconnecting bluetooth!

Identified the Won't Wake from Sleep Issue

Hi,

I identified the will not wake from sleep issue due to Bluetooth.

The way I solved it, got rid of my bluetooth mouse and keyboard and switched to USB. It was getting annoying playing StarCraft 2 anyway with Bluetooth. Since Feb 20, 2011 after switching to USB I have never had the sleep issue.

Now the USB solution may not work for you if you are stuck on Bluetooth. Here are two more options I can see.

1) Try and move your Bluetooth mouse and keyboard closer to the iMac. Based on what I can see in the system logs, at some point Mac OS X loses the connection and puts itself in a loop and then get's stuck there.

2) Call Apple with this data and ask them to replicate this issue and fix Mac OS X so this stops happening. There is not special software that interferes with this. Nor is due to how things are setup. I verified this by wiping and re-installing Mac OS X with updates 10.6.4 - 10.6.7 multiple times different ways without additional software and duplicated this issue. Apple should be able to duplicate this issue themselves with this info.

I still have a ticket open and will try to get around to calling them. We just had a baby so there are other priories right now so don't hold your breath.

*** System was definitely not accessible as I even enabled SSH for this test and could not remote in.
