Apple's Phil Schiller Reveals No Plans for an iPhone 5 Dock

When Apple introduced the iPhone 5, there was one seemingly absent accessory: a dock. Apple did introduce other Lightning accessories, including a 30-pin adapter and USB cable. They also announced HDMI and VGA cables would be coming.

In an email published on 9to5Mac, Apple Senior Vice President of Marketing Phil Schiller confirmed that they have no plans on producing an iPhone 5 dock. In a response to a customer inquiry about an Apple-made dock, Schiller wrote:

We do not plan on making a dock for the iPhone 5. Most people who use docks use them with speaker or clock systems.

Schiller signed the email Sent from my iPhone 5. The iPhone 5 launches on Friday, September 21st at 8 a.m. local time.

What?! A dock makes it so much easier. Should've replaced it with a wireless charging system.

I cannot believe this article appeared literally as I was looking at my old dock and trying to find a new one online. I've been using the same dock that came with my original iPhone in 2007! Works like a champ and I'm really sorry to see it won't have a successor and will just become a paperweight.

The knock-off makers are going to have a hard time being original then. Waiting for Twelvesouth or elago to come out with some solution.

Funny, I thought most people that used docks didn't want to mess with a cable falling off a desk/nightstand. I'm someone will make one to make up for your disconnected state with your customers.

So I can enjoy it more than a week before putting a big scratch on it and hating myself immensely.

Almost 3 years with my iPhone and I never bought a dock for it.

It is ironic Apple spends millions developing the case only for most of us to use a cheap plastic cover which makes it thicker, heavier and wrecks the look.

I think this time I'll get a screen cover and belt case but might skip the plastic case, but I really need to see it first, can't wait for Friday!

Me too. I'll need to see how it feels in my hand before deciding on whether to get a case or not. The 4th gen touch, for instance, felt too thin to get a secure grip without a case.

As for the dock, I've never used one with either an iPod or iPhone -- I always just end up hooking it up with the cable for syncing/charging. The dock always felt clumsy and like it would just clutter up any surface it might sit on.

Because I paid $650 for it and can't afford to break the screen if I drop it which will inevitably happen from time to time

Damn!

I use my docks all the time. One on the bed side table and one on my desk at work. I've not actually plugged a cable into my iPhone for ages!

Oh well, hopefully there will be some decent third party ones made. I don't mind paying good money for a dock because I use it so often, and because my phone is never just put down flat on it's back, it stays in great condition.

That seems like a truly unenlightened comment man.

The lack of Apple's dock means there is now an ability for third party manufacturers to cash in and there is no longer a reason to pay Apple their higher prices for a lack-luster dock.

How about to protect your $650 dollar phone when it falls out of your pocket. Besides, reviews have already reported the black coming off of the outer aluminum edge. A simple bumper would address this and preserve the beautiful design.

If the connector is too small to support the phone, couldn't they just add a short "back" to the dock to keep the phone up? Or... something lol
