Apple Begins Running iPad Mini 'Piano' TV Ad

With the launch of the iPad mini today, Apple has started running a new television ad for the device that it showed off during the media event last week.

The ad -- entitled 'Piano' -- doesn't have any voiceover; instead, it shows GarageBand running on the full-size iPad playing one hand of the two-hand duet from 'Heart and Soul'. The song is an easy-to-learn piece popular with beginner pianists. Moments later, the iPad mini appears, playing the second part of the duet.

If I was someone who didn't know what an iPad does, this video makes me think that the iPad is a $329 digital piano.

Everybody knows about the iPad. Apple is exploiting that idea and trying to show something about it.

Moreover, where is that digital piano with a touchscreen on it known as iPad made by Apple?

Everybody is familiar with Apple; and they are just using it to their advantage.

I don't think it's possible to make an ad that everybody likes. But alas, it's Apple's fault for once again failing to to the impossible

I haven't seen any Surface ads yet. I did see a clip from Glee where Surface figured prominently though.

Then why advertise? If someone knows what an iPad is, I'm pretty sure that someone is familiar with apps. And apps means a lot of things. Including digital piano.

That means that this video is targeted to people who doesn't know what an iPad is. And with the video, I'd think that it's a digital piano.

Good work advertising, Apple. Instead of showing the key features of the iPad, making it look like a digital piano is more important. The digital piano isn't even a built in app.

I actually think this commercial is pretty amazing. Great tune and great overall message too. It almost seems like the iPad is moving over for the iPad mini

Im not sure you understand the point of the ad... It is to show the iPad mini doing the same thing as the iPad and do it in a very cute way. I think it is phenomenal.

Agreed! Unless they've been under a rock for the last 10 years or so.

To my mind, the gist of the ad is, that the smaller iPad works just the same way, and is just as versatile, fun, capable, .......... you fill in the blank, as the larger one, but just a bit, um....smaller, and therefore probably a bit cheaper. No words required.....Brilliant advertising. Kudos to that advertising agency!

Advertising isn't primarily about showing you what a product does. The goals of advertising, I'm sure there are more than this, are:

To raise awareness of the brand and/ or product
Provoke an emotional response
And in a limited fashion give some idea of what the product is.

Example: you'll never see an alcoholic product showing someone stumbling over drunk. Instead you'll be shown images of fun, hot women, or what ever other type if emotion the advertising company think will provoke you into acting and buying the product.

I personally didn't like the advert, but then again I have no interest in playing musical instruments. Bottom line it didn't provoke any type of emotional response from me. But it's blatantly obvious to see that the advertisement was a success by how many people on here love this advert and responded in an emotional way

Very rarely is an advertisement about showing you what a product does.

Advertising is done in campaigns, not individual ads. Besides, most people in western countries between 5 and 90 likely know what an iPad is.

You ever seen a droid commercial? They show the device blasting wholes through walls.

I remember at school trying to explain to a classmate how to balance a particular equation. After half an hour I learned a lesson - there are some people who just don't get it - no amount of explanation can make them understand.

Brilliant and clever ad by the way.

I suppose you have a point in that people with an autism spectrum disorder will think the iPad is a digital piano.

Everyone knows what Coke is... why do they continue to advertise?

You don't only advertise to "announce" a product, you advertise to keep it relevant.

Because it evokes positive emotion which people would tie to the product and influence their decision. It smartly shows the difference between the two devices as well.

Honestly anyone who has no idea what an iPad is a does is not likely to buy one nor have the resources to do so. This was a tv commercial. Have the shows on tv have iPads being used in them.

You are confusing how an unknown product type and brand should advertise vs the largest company in the world on one of their most famous product lines.

You think apple should just list a spec sheet and give a usage demo? The original iPad commercials did show what it is however where apple will place these ads are in shows where viewers are well aware of what an iPad does. You think if hp ran an ad for a pf they should show you how to install windows?
