Early Signs of OS X 10.9 Unsurprisingly Showing Up in Web Logs

In what should not be a significant surprise, Apple is already hard at work on OS X 10.9, the next major version of its Mac operating system. Signs of OS X 10.9 showing up in web logs were publicized [Google translation] earlier today by Czech site Letem svetem Applem, and 9to5Mac confirmed that some of the OS X 10.9 hits showing up on its own site were coming from Apple's corporate network.

Hits on macrumors.com from systems identifying themselves as running OS X 10.9

A look at our own logs shows similar activity, although there has not been a noticeable uptick in hits over the past several months. Rather, we have been seeing a number of spikes in activity since at least mid-August, consistent with limited internal testing during the working week. Similar patterns were previously seen for OS X 10.8 in 2011 and OS X 10.7 in 2009/2010.

It is trivial to fake such identification strings, meaning that at least some of the data should be considered untrustworthy. But hits identified as coming from Apple's own networks carry a much greater likelihood of being legitimate, and so it seems fairly clear that Apple is indeed using systems running OS X 10.9 to browse the Internet.

A release date for OS X 10.9 is currently unknown, but Apple has stated that is moving toward a more rapid development cycle on OS X, with OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion's July 2012 launch coming almost exactly one year after the debut of OS X 10.7 Lion. Assuming a similar timeline for OS X 10.9, Apple may begin releasing developer previews in early 2013 ahead of a public launch in the middle of the year.

Something big would very likely be total integration with iOS, but maybe not in 10.9.

Thats the great thing about the english language. I can have an E sound, for example niece. Therefore pronouncing OS XI as Oh Sexy, is not a big stretch, and is in fact what I did as soon as I read it.

Truly the pinnacle of OS X. Still had classic support, and before Apple started taking away features big time.

It could very well be better. 10.0 was a very raw system. it tool to 10.2 at least to get OS X to become pretty good.

And it's gonna be for ARM-based notebooks.

And it's gonna be a total redesign.

I wouldn't be surprised if this did happen because Apple is trying so hard to be independent.

It will be further integration with iOS, just like a Feral cat. Once domesticated yet now contains elements of the wild beast. A hybrid mixture of both worlds.

i think it would be unwise to try making something completely different post-os10.9 solely based on naming numerical conventions. if apple aspires to do something different, it's most certainly not driven by them running out of numbers

The problem is that each release is full of bugs, and each release breaks features like 3-finger swiping back in Finder (which sometimes works sometimes doesn't, while it worked all the time in SL), etc… The more frequently they release a new OS X, the more time we have to spend on a buggy system, and the less bugs they can fix until the next release.

I still think Leopard was the best, by the standards at that time. Back then features like Spaces, Time Machine, QuickLook and Stacks would be so awesome, they would really make your computer a lot better. Now you get small features added, but full of bugs and inconsistencies (like notifications, gestures, Mission Control, iCloud, AutoSave, Resume, etc…).

I think that Apple has gone from a very well controlled system with great solid features to a loosely looked-after system with tons of different small features, many that annoy you more than they help, while the old ones stick around with broken aspects and new bugs that never get noticed.
