Samsung Denies Claims of Price Hikes for iOS Device Chip Production

Earlier this week, it was reported that Samsung had instituted a 20% price increase for production of Apple's A-series chips used in the company's iOS devices. The move was seen by some as a potential salvo in the ongoing patent battle between the two companies.

The Street now reports on an article [Google translation] from Korean newspaper The Hankyoreh citing a Samsung executive as saying that the rumors of a price hike are untrue.

After reports earlier in the week that the South Korean technology giant was raising application processor (AP) prices on Apple by as much as 20%, a Samsung Electronics official denied the reports to The Hankyoreh, a Seoul-based newspaper.

The unnamed official noted that prices are set at the beginning of the year and aren't changed easily.

Conflicting reports about possible price hikes by Samsung come as the company has indicated that it is not interested in settling the patent dispute with Apple. HTC and Apple settled their dispute in an agreement announced this weekend.

Once read in a (kind of political) magazine in a retraction of an article: "We printed this article because we had a declaration under oath by X that these facts were true. We are now retracting this article because we have a declaration under oath by Y that these facts are wrong. Since somebody lied under oath, we are handing the matter to the police".

To my understanding, Apple designed/developed it ... but Samsung is the one who actually manufactured to Apple's specifications. Opposite of Apple having to chose from a set of available processors on the market...

No it was a "modified" design, meaning they took an existing chip and "tweaked " it a bit. Samsung is the fabricator.

Not sure why you think a company as large as Samsung that makes everything from televisions to tablets to dishwashers to NAND to washing machines to mobile CPU fabrications is going to really hurt from Apple moving away from them. The ones who are really going to hurt is you. They are going to keep their margins high while providing a lesser quality product by going with cheaper and less field tested partners. Samsung has some of the best Fabrications in the mobile market and their NAND is second to none. If you are the people here are okay with getting second rate parts in your 800$ phones, 400$ subsidized, then by all means. Myself, however, would like to get what I paid for and having second rate part manufactures because Apple can't just get along with everyone is not really acceptable at the premiums they are charging for their devices.

Well, "the beginning of the year" is pretty soon, perhaps the 20% corresponds to what Samsung is looking for next year. I assume negotiations are underway.

I suspect it is more of that ilk. Apple is cutting orders to Samsung to spread the wealth so Samsung is asking for 20% more money for what they are making to make up one of the lost income

And the winner is ... TSMC.

I think at this stage Apple would rather pay a lot of money to TSMC than less money to Samsung. A year ago Apple would have said to TSMC "We pay X dollars to Samsung for ARM chips. Can you do it for less?" Today they would ask "We pay X dollars to Samsung for ARM chips. Can you do it for not much more?"

If the 20% story had been true (which nobody knows, really), they would say to TSMC: "How much does it cost to build the ARM chips that we need?". And with the HTC settlement I wouldn't be surprised if they added "And how much for a few more million Apple-designed chips for HTC, so they can stop buying from Samsung".

If you want to be believed. For example, if you are a whistleblower talking about evil things some company does, that company may find employees willing to claim that you are lying. You can raise the stakes: It is much harder for them to find someone willing to lie for them if they risk going to jail.
