Listings for Holiday Games and Apps Appear on Apple TV, Undoubtedly in Error

As noted by Mac OS Ken, a new "Holiday" content section has appeared buried in the iTunes Store on the Apple TV. Interestingly, the section contains numerous banners advertising apps and games, which are of course not currently compatible with the Apple TV.

The new content sections are not functional, as no listings appear when the various banners are selected with the Apple TV remote. The section can be found by navigating to Movies -> Genres -> Classics -> Holiday Music, Movies, and More.

The new listings are almost certainly an error, with banners for Apple's new Holiday section [iTunes Store] being served to the wrong device.

Steve Jobs had noted soon after the introduction of the second-generation Apple TV in September 2010 that an App Store for the iOS-based device could launch when the time is right. Such an effort would, however, require Apple to work with developers on tools for creating apps for the device, and there has been no sign of an effort on that front.

Another slip-up? I'm not complaining!

I'd really like to see Safari added in addition to apps, though.

Hey, I'm a slow reader. At least I had a few happy seconds.

On a more serious note... I wonder if Apple could get away with running iPhone 5 apps unmodified on the ATV? They're the same 16:9 ratio as a widescreen TV, and though short of 720p they should be perfectly usable on a HDTV. Of course, that said there aren't a huge number of updated iPhone 5 apps out there, but at least apps on ATV wouldn't necessarily require yet another resolution to build for.

Not at all.nor is it a clue.

Apple has been doing these cross type categories or a while. In fact there is often at least one going at all times in the store. It's a marketing gambit. One that they are not blocking from Apple TV users because those folks typically either have an iDevice or an interest in one. So Apple exposes them to what serves those items to push sales.

Nothing more or less

As others have said, this is about Apple creating the platform and then letting others take advantage of it. Apple TV support for keyboards is good, just need to add game controllers (if they aren't covered by the keyboards update). Then they add app support, sit back and see what happens.

The lack of processing power and storage on the Apple TV will be a limiting factor. But if the platform takes off they can do the same as they have with the other iOS products, bring out a new higher spec Apple TV and then keep the old model as the cheap option.

They wouldn't get anywhere near the hardcore market covered by the PS3 and Xbox 360, but I reckon the Wii / Wii U market would be well within their sights. Bump the spec of the Apple TV, add on some controller cases for iOS devices and you're pretty much got a Wii U except it does a lot more.

Find it amazing they haven't added app support to the Apple TV yet. If the added support for blue tooth game controllers as well (especially for the Wii) it wouldn't take long for it to make massive inroads to the console market.

Not sure about game controllers but it looks like bluetooth keyboard support could be on it's way... http://www.techradar.com/news/comput...e-beta-1118061 so it isn't outside the realms of possibility...

Apple TV with 64gb of storage. A6X graphics and a Bluetooth game controller + App Store = RIP console market.

Interesting.

The new Nanos have an accelerometer and now bluetooth. Could Apple update the Nano OS to include a game controller function?

iOS 6.1 beta turns on Bluetooth (to pair keyboards or iPhone/iPod or iPad) on the Apple TV + apps coming soon = App Store on your big screen plus iDevice Bluetooth controller (eg. for gaming). Apple TV needs a capacity boost though....

I, as a developer, don't think Apple really needs to do anything to support apps on the Apple TV over what they already have.

They've given us plenty to stream content from iOS devices to Apple TVs... I don't see much value in being able to control an Apple TV without an iOS device, for indie devs. The Apple remote works for navigating audio/video content and not much else... Without an iOS device there's no practice means of controlling any other type of app, and for an indie developer, I'd say making an app for streaming content really isn't their thing... Like, they'd need content to stream, which means they're a huge content provider company, not an indie developer.

About time they get serious the gaming business is a billion dollar field.

THink for a second.

Apple TV with 16 / 32 / 64 gigs of storage 3 price points.
A6 Processor 1 gig ram

Free Apple Controller APP for iphone, itouch and ipad that works as a remote with the Apple TV. Apple TV can work like a Wii-U as well. Two players One on TV and one on the iPhone or iPad screen airplay synching.

A6 Processor 1 gig ram
Apps $0.99 through 19.99 (Killer feature)

Optional Bluetooth controller that is identical in layout and buttons to free app. So you can choice.

$149.99 for the Apple TV / Game console...
Activate with iCloud and allows you to stream / play your music while you game as well.

This would without a doubt make a major dent in the Game market...

Without a dedicated GPU, the TV will not be able to compete with the consoles. That being said, non-game apps could be huge.
