Google Maps for iOS Now Live in App Store

In line with a report from just a few hours ago, Google's new standalone Maps app for iOS [App Store] has just gone live in the App Store. The app offers iOS 6 users unhappy with the experience on Apple's new in-house Maps app the ability to switch back to Google's free offering.

The new Google Maps also offers a number of enhancements beyond what was offered when it powered the built-in Maps app on iOS 5 and earlier, most notably turn-by-turn directions. The absence of that feature from the built-in Maps app had been a major sticking point for the two companies, with its absence putting iOS at a disadvantage relative to Android and Google unwilling to add the feature to Maps for iOS unless Apple made concessions such as greater Google branding within the app and integration with Google Latitude.
Quote:
Navigate your world with Google Maps, now available for iPhone. Get comprehensive, accurate and easy-to-use maps with built-in Google local search, voice guided turn-by-turn navigation, public transit directions, Street View and more. Use Google Maps to discover great places to eat, drink, shop and play, with ratings and reviews from people you trust. Sign in to save your favorite places and quickly access all your past searches and directions from your computer, right on your phone.
A number of reports had indicated that Google was working toward submission of its standalone Maps app, but some Google employees were reportedly pessimistic about its chances for approval. [Google Maps iTunes Link]

Update: Some users are experiencing difficulties downloading Google Maps, and it may take some time for availability to propagate throughout Apple's servers.

Also getting the "no longer available" error. I'm guessing it will be fixed soon.

I tried to download it within just a couple minutes of the news going live but I get this same message on my iPhone and iPad. I guess it just needs more time... But I'm impatient.

They moved it, its no longer in the middle of that forrest. Now you have to drive down a dangerous one lane dirt road to get to it.

Click on the link in the news story. I could see it via search or anywhere else but clicking the link on my iPhone allowed to download it.

Just been playing around with it. Haven't use it in real world yet but from what I can see it is wayyyyyy better than apples built in app. If only stock apps could be deleted.

It may be good but the fact that I have to pull over to the side of the road and input an address is a deal killer. i would rather use a flawed Apple Maps product with Siri on the go.

Honest question. I am still running iOS 5.1.1. Do I need to download this?

Yes, if you want turn-by-turn.

It seems the new version, which you need to install, has turn by turn directions - whereas the old version that was built into iOS 5 did not.

The only reason I did not upgrade to iOS 6 was to retain Google Maps, but if this new version is any good, I'll upgrade to 6.

You can use Siri to speak the address after selecting the field in Google Maps. Plus, they'll probably add Google Voice search to it eventually, at least before Apple lets you specify a default mapping app.

I've been getting the "temporarily unavailable" for about a half hour now. I'm on the west coast.

I noticed that the update date listed for the app is December 13. Today is the 12th. Did someone at Apple release it a day early?

Maybe the "unavailability" has more to do with the fact that MILLIONS of people want the app at the same time?

Now, how soon can we make the Google Maps app the DEFAULT Maps app in iOS?

Mark

Edit: I was finally able to download it!
