Walmart Offering iPhone 5 for $127, Third-Generation iPad for $399

With the holiday shopping season in full swing, we've been highlighting several increasingly good deals on the iPhone 5, and Walmart is now launching new discounts on both the iPhone and iPad that may be of interest to some readers.

Starting today, Walmart has dropped prices on both the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S, with the 16 GB iPhone 5 now on sale for just $127 and the iPhone 4S coming in at $47.

In addition, Walmart is now selling the latest fourth-generation 16 GB Wi-Fi iPad for just $399, a $100 discount from standard pricing. And beginning on Monday, Walmart will also include a $30 iTunes gift card bonus with iPad purchases.

Despite the iPhone 5 having launched in the United States less than three months ago, retailers are offering aggressive discounts on the devices to attract holiday shoppers. RadioShack is currently offering all iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S models at $50 discounts from their regular prices, and also offering email coupons for $10 credit on future purchases for every $50 spent during the holiday shopping season. RadioShack also offers price matching through its Mobile Low Price Guarantee, suggesting that it is likely to match Walmart's discounted pricing upon request.

Update: Wal-Mart spokesperson Sarah Spencer gave MacRumors this statement regarding inventory of the products on sale. Something to keep in mind for people thinking of taking advantage of the promotions:

Walmart works closely with Apple to secure some of the strongest allocations of their products. That being said, inventory is a first come first serve basis so we recommend customers come early to secure their Apple product. We will not offer rain checks but customers should know we will be refreshing our inventory on an ongoing basis.

Update 2: Walmart has contacted MacRumors to note that it erred in stating that the iPad promotion was for the current generation. It is in fact the third-generation iPad that is on closeout sale for $399.

Something tells me that this might be partly due to Hurricane Sandy and the effects it has on big retail store chains. I wonder how many WalMarts are shut down or not doing much business because of Hurricane Sandy.

Plus, most people typically go to Apple Stores or on-line to buy their products and this is how they differentiate themselves.

Or simply by the fact that Walmart is always understaffed, slow, and overall chaotic.

I called 3 different stores to see if they have the phone, because the website itself is not able to provide such information, and all 3 of them were either too busy or...too busy to pick up the phone.

So I went in the store and again, everything was chaotic and I had to literally interrupt someone to get an answer.

Finally I got to a store that does have the phone in stock, the only employee behind the counter was literally bombarded by 3 other customers slowly asking questions, and I basically wandered around as my wife waited for the customer rep to become available.

Once the process gets started, as I said, it took another 30 minutes before the whole thing was done.

So during the entire process, I walked into 3 different Walmarts, waited forever, and I would have easily bought something during all those visits. So ya, I think Walmart's sale worked. It got bunch of people into the store and make them spend a lot of time in there as well.

Let's try to keep the apple with apple, and orange with orange comparison here. According to your logic, I can say why not just get a $10 nokia phone when you are out and use Skype for $10/month when you have wifi. There are always cheaper options out there, but here I believe most people are comparing subsidized price.

Oh, who offers free service??? That's like saying buying a car is a waste because you have the cost of gas over it's service. Why buy a TV when you have to purchase a service/buy Blu-rays to watch anything on it You get a cheaper phone if you agree to keep service for 2 years. If you bring your own device you're still playing the same amount but can cancel service at anytime.

I've had my service since it was Bell south over 15 years. I have to have a cell phone and the other services in my area are lacking. I going to have the service and might was well take a discount on a device. Is everyone's subsidies somewhat included in the service cost? Yeah, but since phones keep good value most of the time you can upgrade for free every 2 years or you can even make some of that money back.

While I know where you are coming from, our recent move to MA has shown me that not all WalMarts are equal. In the midwest EVERYONE shopped at WalMart. Here I walked into the WalMart and it was filled with riff-raff. I am talking the kind of people I wouldn't want to be around in a dark alley. For me it wouldn't be about associating myself with these people. It would be the risk of getting robbed in the parking lot for the iPad I just bought that would have me worried.

Which doesn't even address the horrible race to the bottom mentality that companies like walmart encourage in people. I'm proud to live somewhere walmart isn't allowed, and even if I did live where their unamerican business practices were accepted I still wouldn't shop there, even if it meant saving some pathetic seventy bucks on an iPhone, or whatever. And if seventy bucks is a big deal to you, maybe it's time to reorganize your priorities and quit buying **** like iPhones and 60" televisions.
