iPhone 5's First Weekend Sales in China Top Two Million

Apple announced tonight that the company has sold over two million of the new iPhone 5 in China, just three days after its launch.
Quote:
"Customer response to iPhone 5 in China has been incredible, setting a new record with the best first weekend sales ever in China," said Tim Cook, Apple's CEO. "China is a very important market for us and customers there cannot wait to get their hands on Apple products."
The most recent launch on Friday included 32 other new countries as well, though the announcement specifically covers China's opening weekend sales.

The original iPhone 5 launch weekend took place in September and saw over 5 million sales to the initial 9 countries including the U.S.

2 million out of a population of 1.35 billion, doesn't look impressive... but it's a huge number. Now if they could get the phone on China's largest network that has close to 500 million subscribers.

800 million out of 1.35 billion people are relatively poor peasants or workers. I say the number is very impressive given the recent report about Android's 90%+ market share in China. Back here in Macrumors a lot of people were bashing Apple in the other thread about the non-existence of waiting lines outside Apple Stores in China .

The major factor for Android so popular in China is because they are cheap. You could easily get one Android handset in less than 120 USD in China. As many people stated the fact that majority of mainland China people only earning tiny salary. So, as only Android is providing cheap smartphone, it could easily take high penetration rate.

Moreover, a non-official fact that Android is easier for pirated software while iPhone (especially latest IOS 6 devices) is almost impossible. Only some rich people or people who don't mind to pay for apps do find the iPhone good.

I know quite some friends living in mainland and when I asked why they choose Android, they offer me the same answer - "All sofware are "free" "

I just don't get why a lot of people need to compare android phones to iPhone. There are way more cell phone companies that uses android os while IOS is exclusive to just apple. Obviously the amount of Android users will outnumber the IOS. I would love to see whats the best weekend sales figure for Samsung Galaxy s3 was.

Even in Hong Kong, people like to say that everything is free for Android.

And they want to rush out a 5S?

Madness. Iphone 5 is a massive upgrade over the previous Iphones and could easily sell what the Iphone 4 managed.

No lines in china is because of the reservation system, and the actual apple store does not sell the iphone 5 without a contract n

the article has failed to mention that both China Telecom and China Unicom were giving away massive discount and expensive gift packs on launch day just to get people to sign their contracts. This has never happened during previous iPhone launch in China. Apple must have given carriers a lot of pressure in order to achieve that 2 million number.

And most of the Chinese population live in conditions like this:

Thumb resize.

So 2 million the first weekend is fine considering their addressable market.

And don't forget... this was just the first weekend. Apple will keep selling iPhones in China from now on.

China will be a good market for Apple.

Who cares? Most of China isn't a first world nation, yet. Well over 40% of the people don't have toilets in their own dwellings and central plumbling for waste removal. And people here are discussing China as having the same conveniences the West expects.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_...ublic_of_China

Don't get me wrong, a good 300-500 million have modern amenities [like we had in the 1940s] and are the potential market. Like what was said above, what we consider middle class in the US and above is a fraction of this number. In ten or fifteen years come back and talk about everyone in the urban centers having the iPhone 20 or whatever it will be.

Throwing out total population numbers to minimize this first 2 million in sales is pure ignorance.

I think the idea is that by Summer/June, Apples biggest competitors Samsung/HTC will have their flagship phones out that could potentially grab people waiting on the 5S. Plus I always liked the June iPhone launches better. Now it seems like Apple just waits till the fall to refresh their entire product line. iPad in Feb with new iOS version announced, with new iOS launch alongside a new iPhone in June is best IMO.

China is a Germany or UK attached to a dirt poor country of over 1 billion. Unless Apple releases a $99 phone (unsubsidized) they will get Western European sales results from China.

I.e. there are about 75 million people who live at Western standards of living (with similar incomes), while much of the rest of the population (particularly in rural backwaters) lives on a tiny fraction of that.

Those carriers are going to take market share from China Mobile. This was the experience with AT&T during the iPhone rollout and exclusivity. It doesn't matter one wit the exclusivity away from China Mobile is self-imposed.

China is about to experience an example of the free market working against entrenched interests. Put that on You Tube.

BTW Android users buy more contracts and have more devices but have 1/10 the data usage. Great for networks! Bad for users.

Many, many years ago, people like Dell felt Apple should fold: Apple had only 2 percent of market share.

But Steve Jobs was not concerned. He noted that Microsoft had 95% of market share.

Steve Jobs said it would be easier for Apple to double its market share, than it would be for Microsoft to double its market share.

Likewise, if Apple sold "only" 2 million in a country with 1.3 billion people, look at the potential. In the meantime, Apple has 45% margins on 2 million more iPhones sold. This really is quite incredible.

Bet Apple sure likes the increased margin with not having to take international shipping into account in their margins.
