Steve Jobs' Yacht Impounded in $3.6 Million Dispute Over Design Fee

DutchNews.nl reports on articles from the Dutch media noting that Steve Jobs' yacht Venus, which launched nearly two months ago, has been impounded by authorities due to a dispute with famed French designer Philippe Starck over design fees for the ship.
Quote:
Baliffs boarded the brand new yacht Venus last Wednesday with an Amsterdam court order and it is now literally chained to the dock, the FD said. Port service companies have been instructed not to help it to leave.

The dispute centres on a EUR3m unpaid bill from Starck, known for his minimalist interiors, who worked with Jobs on designing the yacht for years. His fee had been established at 6% of the cost price, Rotterdam lawyer Roeland Klaassen told the paper.
The dispute seems to be related specifically to the cost of building the boat, with Starck claiming that the yacht was slated to cost EUR150 million while the Jobs family says that it only cost EUR105 million. The EUR45 million difference in prices means that Starck believes he is missing out on EUR2.7 million ($3.57 million) in design fees.

The original report from Dutch financial newspaper Financieele Dagblad claims that there was no formal contract between Jobs and Starck, and that an out-of-court settlement of the dispute is likely.

This story has now surpassed the ridiculousness margin steadily accelerating towards the epic fail...

Very nice design, with Frank Lloyd Wright sensibilities.
More suitable design than the "mach 7 aerodynamics" of most recent superyachts.

I don't understand why its so difficult to determine how much it cost to build the yacht?

So we get a silly yacht story (that some can spin as Steve Jobs being a cheap you know what) but no stories like this: http://beta.fool.com/jaans/2012/12/2...gyholnk0000001 Is that too positive for MacRumors to report on? Sigh...

I think it's beautiful. Unlike any yacht ever produced, and is something that only jobs would have the means and design sense to have produced. It's a monument and a rare glimpse into steve's ego. That, and parking in handicap spots. (at least the one at apple)

Same. Don't take it personally, designer, but that design is terrible.

That's because actually it is a miniature version of the ship we see in the movie "2012" .. Jobs wanted it ready by Dec 21st. Now that the 21st is over and nothing happened, they don't want it any more.

I'm surprised the French government hasn't gotten involved, as that's where most of the fee will go. If the fee is paid in 2013, as a french national, Starck will likely face a 75% tax rate
75% tax? What tax is that ??

High earners in France are taxed at 75% of their income.

Why do people think this thing is ugly? I don't think it is.

The only thing I can think of is that some function (not tipping over in rough seas?) trumped form in this case. But then I can't think of any other case where Steve preferred function over form.
