Apple and Intel Working on Bluetooth Smart Watch for 2013 Launch?

Chinese site TGBus reports [Google translation, via Mobilegeeks.de] that Apple and Intel are currently working together on a Bluetooth-enabled smart watch. According to the report, the watch will include a 1.5-inch OLED display from RITEK subsidiary RiTdisplay and will launch in the first half of next year.

Sony SmartWatch (left) and Pebble e-paper watch (right)
Full details on Apple's smart watch are unknown, but the report compares Apple's project to Sony's SmartWatch, although it notes that Apple's Siri voice assistant will provide for greater integration with the iPhone in allowing users to take phone calls directly through the watch.

There are of course other smart watches taking advantage of the low-power Bluetooth 4.0 standard hitting the market as well, with one of the most highly anticipated ones being the Pebble e-paper watch that raised over $10 million on Kickstarter. But while the Pebble team has continued to give regular updates on its development progress, the watch has yet to begin shipping.

I think this would be great!

I have had such incredible good luck with every Apple product I have purchased that I think I would even stop wearing the Rolex GMT Master I have been using since 1989 if they do this.

I can't believe all the Apple haters that infest this blog.

Apple is an unreservedly great company that makes excellent products and richly deserve the success they have achieved.

People still wear watches. I gave enough of them as gifts this Christmas to people who asked for them that any rumor of their demise is sadly mistaken.

I look forward to Apple entering any market since I can be reasonably assured they will improve the products available.

By the time you will ensure all component connectivity compliance and seamless data transmission with updates, new apps downloads, reading all information, hooking it up to a number of places depending on usage ....you will have no time left in a course of the day to do anything fun, anything life related. Lat more expensive, I opt for a good mechanical automatic mechanism from a swiss maker. Effectively it gives me a lot more time.

The next big thing?

There is so much potential on a small wearable computer on the arm, call it watch. Then discontinuing the previous iPod nano makes sense.

I can see Apple next year: "the year when we release the smallest Apple computer (watch) and the biggest Apple computer (iTV) together".

I'd like this. Pebble is looking nice if they can ever get them released.

I regret backing pebble every single day. It has taken them so long to figure out production when Apple can make something 10x better in just a couple of days. The pebble guys had a great idea and a great vision, but they were obviously in way over their heads. If this story is true my I won't even open the box before I put the pebble up on craigslist or ebay.

This. Pebble is like a lottery ticket. The fantasy and hope distract you from the fact that you are a sucker. They are learning to be engineers and I helped pay for their education.

Interesting

Maybe mission creep, but they are missing a bet if it doesn't have GPS to use as an exercise watch. Would replace an existing non Apple gadget for a lot of users...

It seems believable except for the part about Intel. Why would they need Intel for this?

This is me, except for the regret part. I don't regret backing pebble. I wish they'd get these shipped, but given the fact that this is a new product, and a new type of product I would rather they take a little longer and do it right.

However, I do believe than anything Apple makes will be better integrated with my ecosystem, and I would likely look really hard at replacing my Pebble with it. The guys at Pebble better hurry up and get to shipping. Otherwise they're only going to sell the original backers' units, and have no on going business. Or else they'll just have to move over and exclusively design for Android. And we know how cheap Android users are :-)

I'm a Pebble backer as well, but I don't fault the Pebble team for the delays. Their project went way beyond their initial goal (their target was $100,000 or about 1,000 watches...they raised over $10 million or over 100,000 watches).

Also, no, Apply could not produce a "better" product in just a couple of days. Apple would spend years designing and manufacturing.

You also have to give the Pebble team credit: we get regular updates on what is happening so that it's clear that work is moving forward. Sure, it would be great to know the ship date...but I don't want to see it stated and then missed. Better to be sure before committing.

If you read those "updates" like I do you realize that all their delays are due to trying to figure out their production lines. They knew what they wanted to make since day one (the designing part) but it has taking them forever to try to figure out everything in China. Weather they were planning on making 1,000 or 100,000, they would have still likely had to go to china so all this would still be taking this long.

I'm not blaming these guys, I'm sure they are working their butts off, but I stand by my statement that apple could make something better in a couple of days because they already have everything figured out, and if they design something like this they could pick up the phone and have a million units shipped in no time. Again I'm not blaming the pebble guys, more myself because I should have seen this coming, but still I wish this damn thing would have shipped before apple came out with one

I think you nailed it. I feel the same way about that other Kickstarter project (universal charger) that got funded but they're pulling out. They blamed Apple (the Lightning connector), but I suspect they ran into other problems.
