Apple Promotes 'Do Not Disturb' in TV Ad On Same Day as New Year's Day Bug Discovered

Apple posted a new television ad today highlighting their "Do Not Disturb" feature. Professional tennis players Serena and Venus Williams are shown playing ping-pong against the narrator in a dream:

Quote:
Ever had a really cool dream? I'm having one right now. I don't want to be disturbed. And I won't because before I went to sleep, I set this. Now my iPhone knows not to ring unless its important. Cause disturbing this would just be... Wrong.
Ironically, the new ad comes on the same day that a bug in the scheduled Do Not Disturb feature prevented it from turning off on many iPhones.

I think what they are trying to say is, "now you can go longer without being disturbed!"

In the original version of this ad, Venus pulls out through exhaustion.

Given that, like so many other bugs, this one was a minority and could be due to any of a numbers of factors including jailbreaking, carrier systems feeding back information to phones with 'set date and time automatically' turned on, having not updated past 6.0 and so on its not really that embarrassing.

Or wouldn't be if the blogs weren't hyping it as a fatal flaw etc for hit fodder

Not me or my flatmates on several devices. None of my friends or co workers. None of my 7 siblings or their SO or my friends and family in several countries

It might not be his choice. Serena is under an endorsement contract with Nike and would be required to wear their shoes all the time. Given that Apple is partners with Nike, Tim wouldn't fuss over that bit. And Serena is known for wearing headbands often it not all the time when she's playing so it's really not that over the top. It's just Serena being Serena.

I did not think that this feature was big enough to warrant an entire ad being made about it...

It all depends on one's preferences. Given how little it's been talked about since its inception, it's rather trivial. I work within a huge group of iOS enthusiasts & do not disturb has rarely been acknowledged.

Actually got me to find it and use it, didn't know it was there and where till the ad so it served it's function of creating awareness.

Have to laugh at the face palms, but I doubt this ad is aimed at the geeks on here that are giving all the raspberries. This is for the rest of us. This is an awesome feature since I use my iPhone for business, I can set schedule outside of business hours when only certain people can bug me.

Maybe the ad was released with Apple's full awareness of the bug. Apple gets a bunch of people using the feature they weren't aware of, then in a few days they release an update touting improvements to DND including "a bug fix for some users."

Or maybe I just need to adjust my tinfoil hat

Well overdue feature. Other phones have had email schedules and timed profiles for many many years. It would be nice to have a separate email schedule because always out of hours I want my phone to fully function, but I just don't want work emails. And manually stopping it???? not a solution. Work/life balance - not with an iPhone. It's a 100% iPhone life dominated by the phone. This may seem a bit harsh for some but I get lots of emails...

That's something I love about ads. Samsung makes these huge elaborate ads that don't make sense to many people or are distracted by them focusing on making fun of Apple. Apple makes an ad like this that steals EVERYONES attention and makes them fascinated to see what's going to happen and gets one simple point across. The ads together paint a picture of what Apple wants them to see the iPhone as
