Yields of 27-Inch iMac Displays Expected to Improve Next Month

Apple's 27-inch iMac continues to be in short supply, with Apple quoting 3-4 week shipping estimates for new online orders, compared to shorter but still substantial 7-10 day estimates for the smaller 21.5-inch models. Even before launch, the new iMac was projected to be in short supply into 2013, due in large part to issues with Apple's new display assembly process that includes laminating the display directly to the machine's cover glass.

Digitimes now reports that the display lamination issue is still a problem for Apple supplier LG Display, with the larger 27-inch panels seeing lower yields than the 21.5 inch displays.
Quote:
LG Display has reportedly been facing full lamination issues while producing the panels, slowing down shipments of the 27-inch device to 100,000 units a month, added the sources.

LG Display, however, has secured strong yields for Apple's new 21.5-inch model, which currently has reached monthly shipments of 300,000-400,000 units, noted the sources.
The report does claim, however, that LG is moving toward better yields of the larger displays, with greater availability set to come next month. The improved yields should reduce what appears to be the main bottleneck in iMac production, thus leading to greater availability and shorter shipping estimates for new orders.

Apple's redesigned iMac is considerably thinner than its predecessor and contains 40% less volume, changes that have been enabled by a number of technological advancements such as the lamination to create thinner and more vibrant displays and the use of advanced welding techniques. Those advancements have not come without challenges, however, as seen with the displays holding back production on the larger iMac models.

I'm glad I pulled the trigger on day 1. I debated picking one from the local store here but I'm guessing I still wouldn't have one....

Hopefully with the supply of 27" displays improving, we'll soon see a 27" Thunderbolt monitor with this new display tech (and physical design), coupled with USB 3.0 ports.

This is 2013, you'd think they would have figured out these amateur manufacturing supply/demand issues by now...

An iMac is a complicated piece of kit, especially the new ones. To call issues such as these "amateur," whatever you mean by that, is ludicrous.

I mean, this is 2013, you'd think ignorant people would have stopped disrupting forum discussions by now...

How so? It's not like they are each handmade individually? Care to back up your dumb remark?

This just seems like a novice oversight - to not get your supply chain in order before launch but then again i'm not managing a tech giant that creates millions in revenue so take my inference very lightly....

Amature? Amature? AMATURE? You obviously have no clue as to how far out on the bleeding edge of technology Apple operates.

I've never understood the back-seat driver mentality from those who think that cutting edge design and technology is popped out like a burger at the Wendy's drive-up window. Seriously, be patient and respectful of Apple's intentions. Personally, I've never been disappointed with waiting a bit for the best. There WAS a time, I assure you, when getting it 'right now' wasn't even an option.

Damn you are whipped. And easily fooled by marketing on what is cutting edge.

Especially when you consider just how long we waited for the re-fresh...I've had my new 27" for a couple of weeks now and I'm delighted with it. But surely Apple must have anticipated a high level of orders...particularly BTO's and prepared themselves accordingly.

You nailed it.

I think the "problem" with this backlog is because Apple failed to accurately guess the high level of demand. This is given the fact that the iMacs had not seen a refresh for well over a year. It was long overdue, and many people were lined up to get a new iMac (myself included) the minute it was released. The problem was that Apple was not prepared to satisfy the pent-up demand.

Enjoying two 27" at our office, glad I snagged 'em on launch day. Delivered on Dec 18th. I find it hard to believe they can only yank out 100,000/month that must be just the tip of the global demand.

I just ordered one this morning. I'm in no real hurry to get it, but 3-4 weeks will be the longest I've ever waited for an (non-preorder) Apple order. Hopefully they really can get production issues worked out and begin to meet demand soon.

Have you tested your iMacs for Image Retention? There are some reports that the iMac is suffering from the same issue as the MBPr.

new iMac owners... Is there a noticeable improvement in this new "closer to the glass" screen vs the old iMacs and thunderbolts?

Yes the new iMac has both improved clarity and a significant decrease in glare. Very significant improvement over the mid 2010 iMac. I am very impressed with the overall quality. The 1 TB fusion drive/3.4 GHZ processor makes the new iMac quite fast.
