AT&T Expands FaceTime Over Cellular Support to All Tiered Data Plans

AT&T has again expanded access to the FaceTime Over Cellular feature to customers on all tiered data plans with a compatible FaceTime device. Previously, only users with an LTE device -- the iPad 3 and 4, as well as the iPhone 5 and iPad mini -- could use FaceTime over cellular. The only users who still can't use the feature are users with a grandfathered unlimited data plan.

Quote:
When FaceTime over Cellular launched in September 2012, we explained that we wanted to roll it out gradually to ensure the service had minimal impact on the mobile experience for all of our customers.

As a result of ongoing testing, we're announcing AT&T will enable FaceTime over Cellular at no extra charge for customers with any tiered data plan using a compatible iOS device.

This means iPhone 4S customers with tiered plans will be able to make FaceTime calls over the AT&T cellular network. AT&T previously made FaceTime over Cellular available to customers with a Mobile Share plan and those with an LTE device on tiered plans.
AT&T says the update should be automatically applied over the next few months, and eligible users won't need to do anything special to begin using FaceTime over cellular.

The upshot is that any AT&T customer with a supported device -- the iPhone 4S and newer, the third generation iPad and newer, and the iPad mini -- will soon be able to use FaceTime over cellular.

Thanks, it's hard to believe my genes could have produced such a pretty girl. Got another one on the way, but don't know if it's a girl or boy yet. Only 10 weeks along.

There is VOICE and there is DATA.

FaceTime is certainly not under VOICE plan, because it's not VOICE. FaceTime runs on DATA.

So, my question is: WTF! If I have UNLIMITED DATA, why are those bastards limiting my DATA???

You think you're getting screwed, but really, I think they're doing this so they can collect more overage from tiered users.

This is one of the reasons I finally left AT&T and switched to verizon - the only reason I stayed with att for so long was because of the unlimited plan I was grandfathered into. They try to do everything to get users to switch off of it. Its completely a ****** thing to do to their own customers. Verizon doesnt offer unlimited plans but all of their data plans include tethering. Even if you wanted to pay a little extra on att you cannot tether at all unless you give up your unlimited plan.

No offense but... good. We don't want the network slowed down.

True ^^

I know someone with unlimited 4G LTE on Verizon. I'm pretty sure Verizon considers him a burden, not a customer, with all of the streaming he does

This is brilliant -- the only people who can afford to pay for Facetime over cellular are the only ones AT&T won't let use the service.

Oh I'd love to hear this logic.

It's just more of the phenomenon where I see that the more that I pay, the worse my cell phone service gets.
You pay the same as you did before. Not more.

Your cell phone service doesn't get worse - it has stayed the same. That is if you are talking features.

If you're talking about quality of service where you are - then I apologize...

Facetime over cellular previously and currently already works on the 4S. I believe you had to be on a mobile share plan though. I know I have used it a few times on my 4S.

How many of the complainers here would actually use facetime over cellular?

I would. I'm deaf and use facetime over cellular. It sucks though because I have the unlimited plan.

Discriminated, ironically, for being the most loyal customers. I've been with AT&T for over a decade, paid EVERY bill on time, or early, and never complained about anything they've ever charged me for.. And because of that I am punished. Way to appreciate ur most loyal following!!

It's just a concerted effort to kick us off the plan and move to a tiered plan.

Considering I've used facetime only once in the last two years I'm not moving.

They may not let us use FaceTime over Cellular, but at least we can Netflix over Cellular all day long if we want to.

Once again, unlimited is not unlimited. There is cap. Get over it and move on. If you're that unhappy switch to another carrier that will cap you and doesn't have unlimited unless you want to really pay for it.

I was grandfathered in with unlimited. I switched to a plan that allowed me to tether. I didn't complain about unlimited and blah blah blah how entitled I should be.

Move on with your life already and quit bitching.

Is it me or does anyone get the impression that AT&T does NOT want people to use its network??? You see commercials on how great it is, then they have these garbage data plans that rape your wallet. I drove past an AT&T store and my iPhone 5 just connected to their crappy wifi.

Guy at an AT&T store said they get written up for using too much data on their company phones.

Why does this company not want anyone using their data network? T-Mobile seems to be the only company encouraging data use. ?

Discriminated against?

I'm a grandfathered unlimited data customer too but come on, you've got to see their side of this. They don't want people to have unlimited plans anymore so of course they're not going to give us any perks. It's these kinds of things that are supposed to convince us to get a tiered plan.
