Jonathan Ive Inspires Child Designers, Receives BBC's Gold Blue Peter Badge Amid Apple's Aluminum Milling Machines

Apple design chief Jonathan Ive has been awarded a gold badge by the BBC children's show Blue Peter, a show the British-born designer watched as a child and which encourages children to make things from ordinary household objects. Blue Peter is the world's longest-running children's television show, having been on the air for over 50 years.

The show said that Ive was an "inspiration to children around the world". Blue Peter awards the badges to those it considers have encouraged and inspired children to develop their talents, with the gold badge awarded to Ive marking exceptional achievement.

The interview clip accompanying the BBC's article represents a rare public appearance by Ive, and it takes place in an Apple facility surrounded by equipment including a CNC machine for milling aluminum. Ive will also be featured in the half-hour Blue Peter episode airing tomorrow on CBBC.

Ive said that he had loved watching the show as a child, and described receiving the award as 'absolutely incredible'. He referenced the way the show encouraged children to make things from objects as ordinary as detergent bottles.
Quote:
I loved the way there was just products that you thought were no longer useful, but reusing them. It was fantastic.
Ive in turn presented the show with a Blue Peter badge milled from a single block of aluminum, the approach famously used for the MacBook Pro.

Ahh, I remember watching Blue Peter avidly as a child - even visited the set and everything! If only I'd have been young enough at the time to enter such a competition

It's great to see the non-promotional, human side to Sir Ive.

Jonathan Ive has a Blue Peter?!

They really should've thought more about the name for that award.

Blue Peter is the name of the BBC Kids programme, and it got it's name from the maritime signals flag called the Blue Peter that is/used to be flown when a vessel was about to leave port...

The show is called Blue Peter and its been around since 1958. Blue Peter is not an award, its a very well known show, the worlds longest running children's show.

For a second I thought that was his son

For a very short second scanning through the headline (child) and the pic, I thought that guy is his son, but then realized that he is too young to have a son this old (and read the article), but darn, he looks like him.

Ivy, call your highschool girlfriends

With Steve gone, Jonny is Apple's most valuable asset, bar none.

I can't wait to see what he's been working on for iOS and OS X.

What he does on his own time is his choice, yes he has the implications on the image that is 'Apple' to consider but a man with his big boots really does have the power to say, yep, I'm doing this today would like to do it in Fabrication room 3 and will be done when I'm done.

And thats with warranty. You get ripped by Apple when the warranty is over.

iFixit is a great site that not have their heads in Apple's bottom yet. Be happy that they are still independent. At least they try to be honest.
Clearly you haven't looked at the latest surface article on ifixit.

You're welcome. Reported this to MR 2 minutes after it appears on the BBC site. Wont bother in future.

Love the headline but...

Love the headline:

"Jonathan Ive Inspires Child Designers..."

but what exactly is involved in designing a child? Also why do those who design children need inspiration?

The unibody Blue Peter badge is something special, really nice touch. Blue Peter was a cornerstone of may youngsters growing up in Britain, hope Jonny being on there helps inspire the next generation of great designers.
