iPod Touch 4G still worth it ?
We were hesitating to buy our children either a Nintendo 3DS or an iPod Touch.
Now, we have twins so buying them both an iPod Touch 5G would cost quite a bit of money. Therefore, we are considering a 4G. But I'm wondering : the 4G still has as A4 processor, ie slow when compared to the iPad 2, which they play games on right now. Is it still a good idea to buy a 4G ? I also think that iOS 7 will not be coming to the 4G as it's the minimum requirement for iOS6. Also, would they be missing out on lots of games with a 4G ? I would test out performance on my iPhone but that's a 4S, which has an A5 processor so that's not a good reference. Anyone playing lots of games on a 4G ? Is it still worth getting now or should we pay more for the new 5G ?

If you intend for the device to play games, then 5G is the way to go. 4G can't handle much games without stuttering and lagging.
Buy one 5th generation touch and let both of them share?

I bought my brothers 4th generation iPod touches each last year. Now they're showing their age.
They play games but it is not a smooth experience. I think at this point in time the wisest course of action is to buy the 5th generation. Perhaps pick up some refurbs?

Save your money + encourage the importance of sharing among siblings.
Win-win situation.

I guess the 4G is out then.
The 3DS is still an option, but games are more expensive than the ones on the app store (but they're not really comparable either). The 3DS costs about 200 euros with a game included, the iPod Touch 5G costs 329 euros. Times two that's 400 euros for the 3DS, 660 euros for the iPod touch. For 260 euro, we can buy lots of games... Or we could buy one 5G, one 3DS, let them take turns...

You should ask them what they like more before you rush into stores I am not a big fan of the 3/DS simply cause the games ain't better nor do they offer more fun to the 'player' Cut the Rope is one of 'THE' coolest mobile games I've ever played so far, even though it's just simple sliding over the screen. I don't know how old they are but they would have their first own (good) camera in their hands, maybe they gonna be big photographers, there is so much to explore. You could transfer a movie on their iPod for long travel 'n' stuff It also has better battery life + you can charge it over USB in your car (Car cigar jack) It's a little bit complicated with the DSs connector to charge on tour^^ If you wanna show them something cool you can try Augmented Reality stuff, there are some Tower Defense games in the store I am sure there are different type of A.R. games but I am not a big user ![]() Just for you to get the idea. Simpsons: Tapped Out is only available on mobile platforms (Android, iOS) as well as many other games (The Library is much larger on iOS than Nintendo's) They would love that game I am absolutely sure and it's FREE! ![]() but I dunno know your kids so don't judge me if they hate it^^ Good luck

If they enjoy gaming on the iPad and the 5th generation touch is too much, perhaps you could get them Nexus 7's? They have plenty of power and while android doesn't have as many games as iOS there are still PLENTY out there to enjoy. All for $199. They're also more portable than the iPad and can take more of a beating so travel wouldn't be an issue.

why not PSP?
PSP is cheaper now (not to vita) and get them rpg type games, that could last longer. I think there are plenty of second hand games you can find online market. Dont worry about the game price since people are playing them and resale all the time. U get a good deal and the quality of games are way bettery than what you get on Mobile. |

I wouldn't expect an updated version any sooner than May. If not June. I could be wrong too however.

On that PSP : it doesn't really seem like a bad idea. It's dirt cheap, there's a huge catalogue of games to choose from, they can play video, music on it...
It's still officially available so I might look into that. My wife wants them to have an iPod Touch 5G but I'm always thinking of my wallet. Also, I find them a little too young to be hauling such an expensive device around...

The 5th generation iPod is the way to go. My brother has a 4th gen. and it's very slow in general - even performing simple tasks like opening the Messages app take a long time.
Oh and don't consider the 3DS or PSP or anything, they can get iPod games for free whenever they like, and even when they want a paid game it's highly unlikely that it'll be over 3 bucks. Oh, and you won't have to buy games twice with the iPods, but you will with the other portable systems. Get the 5th gen. iPod. Pricey but worth it.

The hardware in the 4th gen touch is pushing 4 years old as its the same as what's in the 3Gs aside from a 200mhz processor

Get them the iPod Touch 5's, especially if they don't have their own computers yet. There is so much more to ios then games which makes it a much better investment. I don't recommend the Nexus 7. As a device it's fine for the money. I don't feel ripped off with mine at all, but the Play Store is just so terribly devoid of iOS quality apps that it makes the whole device seam like a disappointment.

Unfortunately I find myself lately playing the 3DS that I got on sale more than the iPod touch. The reason is that most of my touch games and iPad games need wifi to work. I can't afford a cellular data connection with huge monthly bills, so whenever I want to play the touch it seems that is the time when I am in a non wifi area. The iPad is even worse, which basically needs wifi for everything. However the touch more than meets my needs on other fronts. If you have a way to get always on internet with the touch, then go for it. If you are wondering how I own all this stuff and still can't afford cellular data I won my iPad in a contest and my 3DS was purchased for $99 on sale. The iPod touch 4 is very subpar, I wouldn't even consider it.
Also with the 3DS there is a huge library of cheaper, $10 and below DS games that can be played on it. You don't even have to buy the 3DS games. Of the games I have I have put hundreds and hundreds of hours into the Pokemon series, more than making my purchase worthwhile and that is only counting one series of games. You just have to stick with the games that you can put 60 hours or more per cartridge for it to be a worthwhile value. Also you can sell your used DS or 3DS games on eBay for close to what you paid for them when you are done. Be careful with the Pokemon games though because you can only have one save file per game and if you have 2 kids sharing games that could become a problem, you would have to buy 2 copies of the game, one for each kid.So do your research before you buy games because not every game is like that. If you are going strictly for games and you don't own another version of the DS then I would say go with the 3DS, just keep in mind that the music, camera and Internet functions of the system are extremely sub-par compared with what Apple offers, if you buy the 3DS you will be using it strictly for games. |

It's ok to get them a device at 7 years old its just that they shouldn't be on it all the time especially when in public. I love my electronics like everyone else but it's unnecessary when I see things like 1-2 year olds in strollers holding iPads and watching videos on them and kids playing DS systems at restaurants while eating their meals with the sound turned up so loud that the whole place can hear it. A 1 year old in the stroller should be able to be entertained in public just by looking around at everything and taking in the sights and sounds. Kids really don't need to have a device in their hands while eating food, the food should be enough to occupy them. I am not telling anyone how to parent but this stuff is getting a bit annoying even for someone who is extremely into electronics like myself. It's fine to keep a kid occupied while there is excessive waiting ( can be a godsend in these situations actually) like in a doctors office, or on an airplane, or perhaps in a restaurant before you are seated at a table but they don't need it in their hands 24/7 especially when they are not even a toddler. I actually find it a hassle to pull a device out in public since I am usually busy doing something else and since that occupies my time I don't really need the device.
I am also seeing more 9 year olds climbing into strollers and using their devices while being pushed of around the mall, not sure where this trend came from but now I know why America has a problem with childhood obesity, our kids don't walk, although the parents allowing this is a much larger problem in its own.... If I was 9 years old I definitely would not want to be seen in a stroller.... Would be much too embarrassing. As far as the value goes I am not sure which is better, the App Store has free and cheap games however most of the time you can take a 3DS game and flip it on eBay for almost the same cost you paid for it even if it has been played provided you keep it in good condition with the box and manual intact. You can play for very cheap prices by doing this especially if you beat games quickly but usually 3DS games hold their value for at least 6-8 months and sometimes even years for the quality games. This of course requires you to be set up with an active eBay account. |
