So, iBook G4 1.42GHz is now up and running with Leopard. Swapped disk from another machine so I had to disassemble two iBooks (why are they built the way they are?). Machine works well except for the fact that there's something strange going on with the battery as the charging light shifts back and forth between green and orange. From the system info I can see that the battery does get more charge, slowly but still.
The battery has over 600 load cycles so is it just too old? System info claims that the battery condition is "Good". The machine works with the battery and also with only the charger. I had to detach the DC-IN board in the disassembly process so of course I might have damaged something.
