Apple Among 60 Companies to File Statement with U.S. Supreme Court Backing Gay Marriage

Bloomberg reports that Apple is among 60 companies that have signed on to a filing that will be presented to the Supreme Court backing gay marriage in the United States. The court is currently weighing the constitutionality of California's Proposition 8, in which voters barred gay marriage in 2008. Apple had publicly opposed Proposition 8 at the time.
Quote:
"No matter how welcoming the corporate culture, it cannot overcome the societal stigma institutionalized by Proposition 8 and similar laws," the companies will argue, according to a copy of the brief provided by Orrick Herrington Sutcliffe LLP, the law firm representing the group.

The filing is part of an effort to convince the court that gay marriage has wide public support. Dozens of Republicans, including former presidential candidate and Utah Governor Jon Huntsman and former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman, are also planning to file a brief backing such unions.
Only nine states explicitly permit same-sex marriage, and the companies signing the filing argue that workplace morale and recruiting are harmed in the other 41 states. Among the companies joining Apple on the filing are Intel, Facebook, Nike, Oracle, and Qualcomm. The Supreme Court will begin hearing arguments on the Proposition 8 case and a second one addressing the federal Defense of Marriage Act in late March.

True, but I'm sure straight CEOs back gay marriage. No need to be gay to support gays

If you read the article, you'd see that Apple's been involved since 2008, well before Tim Cook took over the show.

Anyway, with how much separation of church and state has happened in the last 100 years, I just don't get how gay marriage isn't allowed in every state. I know some people stand up for so called "traditional values", but those values come from the bible. How much longer are they going to put bible values as laws? I know that these values are just the mores of our society that became our laws to start, but there is a point where it needs to change, and this is coming from a conservative christian.

This was a recent debate in the UK. Overwhelming majority of the public were either in favour or couldn't see the issue. You don't have to be gay to support gay marriage.

So Apple backs gay marriage because Tim Cook is reportedly gay?

As someone pointed out earlier Apple has backed this while Steve Jobs was at the helm so your reaction is bogus.

And what about the CEOs of Intel, Facebook, etc.? Are they gay? I don't think so.

This claim reminds me of the days when whites who backed civil rights - HUMAN rights for African Americans were called ****** lovers.

Good grief! You'd think people would have evolved from such neanderthal mindsets by now.

Gay marriage? Don't care... except for the fact that gay rights organizations try to punish those who express their sentiment if it is against them. For that alone, I'd vote NO. Otherwise, I wouldn't have any opinion.

I'm also totally fine with it if it doesn't become part of "affirmative action". Schools already discriminate against/towards kids based on skin color. Though this seems very unlikely to happen, I do not want to see more discrimination, this time based on sexual orientation, in either direction.

I do take issue with some gay rights organisations who take that stance. In some cases they are no better than those who discriminate against gays. I say that as a gay man. Not all gay rights organisations reflect my views.

Wow.

You "don't have any opinion" and you "don't care," but you'd vote against your fellow citizens' rights just to make a point to "gay rights organizations?" And you're saying they're the ones who "punish" people?!?

Geesh, what a land we live in.

I don't know about Steve personally but I'm pretty sure Apple has made gay-rights supporting statements as far back as Steve Jobs's reign.

Pretty much every tech company is the same... Microsoft, Google, etc. have all supported gay rights on multiple occasions. This isn't exactly news.

Oh, you mean just like how the last CEO had pancreatic cancer and he then when on to find new pancreatic cancer treatments? Google and Amazon are also huge supporters of gay rights (Amazon even has a gay commercial airing in the US right now) and neither company has a gay CEO...

I would like to think that it would have happened in any case. Unless the implication is that the other 59 companies did it because of a vested interest rather than just believing it to be the right thing to do.

True but one would think a CEO who is gay wouldn't be against it.
