Adobe's Photoshop Touch Now Available for iPhone

Adobe today announced the release of its Photoshop Touch application for the iPhone. Photoshop Touch is the mobile version of Adobe's well-known Photoshop software, designed to bring core Photoshop capabilities to iOS. Previously, the app was only available for the iPad.

Rather than making the iPad app universal, Adobe is offering Photoshop Touch for the iPhone for $4.99. It includes the same features found in the iPad version of the app, including layers, selection tools, adjustments, and filters. The app also comes bundled with access to Adobe Creative Cloud and 2GB of free storage.

Quote:
-Use popular Photoshop features, such as layers, selection tools, adjustments, and filters, to create mind-blowing images.

-Improve your photos using classic Photoshop features to bring out the best in your photography. Apply precise tone and color adjustments to your entire composition, a particular layer, or a select area.

-Create something other-worldly using painting effects, filter brushes, and so much more. With Photoshop Touch, the creative possibilities are endless.

-Make your images pop with graphical text. Apply strokes, add drop shadows and fades, and more.

-Take advantage of your device's camera to fill an area on a layer with the unique Camera Fill feature.

-Quickly combine images together. Select part of an image to extract just by scribbling with the Scribble Selection tool. With the Refine Edge feature, use your fingertip to easily capture hard-to-select image elements, like hair.

-Start a project on your iPhone or iPod Touch and finish it on your iPad* or back in Photoshop* at your desk using a free membership to Adobe Creative Cloud(TM).** Your projects are automatically synced between your devices.

-Free membership to Creative Cloud provides 2GB of cloud storage.

-Work on high-resolution images while maintaining the highest image quality. Images up to 12 megapixels are supported.
Adobe Photoshop Touch for the iPhone can be downloaded from the App Store for $4.99. [Direct Link]

I am sure that some will disagree, but this seems like a pretty blatant money grab. Why not make it universal???

Is given things away for free when people WILL pay a good way to run a company?

Just because other companies might have done it different doesn't mean this one has to.

Finally, as a free person, you have to option to not buy it.

Five dollars for Photoshop (touch) doesn't sound very greedy to me.

$15 for iPhone+iPad mobile versions are not that bad considering that the PC or Mac version costs over $700.

Oh the trauma $5 in software causes us these days It's not like they promised a free iPhone update for people who bought the iPad version- now that would've been a little rude. Perhaps we should be happy they don't force the dev costs of the iPhone version by charging $15 for people ony interested in the iPad one.

Too late. I searched for a real photo editor last month, and adobe had none for the iPhone, while their supposedly photo retouching apps were just useless toys. I found ArtStudio and bought it, because it has most features from a real photoshop.

I'm not going to give this "photoshop touch" a try, because Adobe is doing useless stuff now, and ArtStudio provides all I need

How many torch apps are there? Why should photo editing be different?

Yes. I really like the variety of them. They all do things differently and have a tool that stands out. Camera+'s Clarity, Snapseed's filters, Hipstamatic's 35mm feel, etc.

While I don't disagree with you, I think that there's a little bit of a marketing decision going on here. If they had made the app universal, then everyone who wanted to buy it just for their iPhones or iPod Touches would pay $10 for it. Thus, all of those sales would have garnered $5 more than they will now. In addition, those who bought it already for their iPads would feel like the company is taking care of them by allowing them to run the same app on all of their iOS devices. On the other hand, by making it separate apps for the iPad and iPhone/iPod, they reduce the profit margin for the new sales to iPhone/iPod users, but increase the number of sales because iPad users have to buy a separate app. However, at the same time, they draw some ill will because of the perception that they are not providing coverage for customers to run their app on all of their iOS devices without additional purchases.

Is there a right or wrong choice here? Not really, but each has its consequences.

If, ultimately, they are going to take the two apps in different directions, then I can see the reasoning behind keeping them separate. Time will tell.

For those of you in the U.S. iTunes cards go on sale all the time, usually 20% off. If you are smart enough to stock up then it's only a $4 app -- a gallon of gas is more expensive, and that's only good for 20-30 miles.
Gas must be expensive where you live. Around here I'm spending about $3.25 per gallon right now. And a Prius gets around 45 miles out of that gallon of gas. Just sayin'...

The marketplace will let us know, but I suspect PS Touch will be in the top 10 to 20 shortly, so, I guess the answer is yes.

I use this and another few apps on my ipad for general design work. Amazing App, although it may not be great on the iPhone due to lack of screen space.
