iCal backup file

I want to backup my iCal and Contacts data to my external hard drive.

What and where are the files located to do this??

They're in the folder named Application Support in your Home folder's Library. However, it's easier to simply use the Backup feature from within each of these apps. This can be accessed via the File menu. :)
