VmWare 3d acceleration driver install?

The virtual video card in your virtual machine is a "VMware SVGA II", not
an 8600GT (check the device manager). What your real video card is
doesn't matter. That's what "virtual" is all about.

VMware's 3D is incomplete, with only DirectX 8.1 and no OpenGL. Not all
games can work on it.

Boot Camp is always recommended for gaming because of the direct
hardware access. Boot Camp itself doesn't support 64-bit yet, but
only in the sense that it doesn't supply the necessary 64-bit drivers.

I've heard of people who have installed XP-64 on Boot Camp, tracking
down and installing the correct drivers themselves. I don't play games, so
I've never had the need to do this myself, so I can't help you there.
You'll need to track down some kind of HOWTO on making XP-64
work in Boot Camp.

Install the VMWare tools package and make sure 3D acceleration is enabled for your virtual machine.

ok so i did that, but when i check the properties on my computer the graphics card still reads "VMware SVGA II"

is that the best graphics i can get?

Yep, because you can't access the actual graphics card directly in a virtualized environment; all access has to be done through VMWare's HAL. If you want to have direct access to all your hardware you need to install Windows natively via Bootcamp.
