iPod Headphone Amps...

I was just wondering what exactly do Headphone Amps do?

when I think of an Amp, I just think of something that makes speakers louder.
but when theres headphone amps going for up to $700 I would hope that they do more than just making your headphones loud.

also, who makes the best headphone amps for portable music players?

I expect noise-blocking earphone/headphone designs would be more useful than another amplifier..

I don't think an 'amplifier' can do anything more than making things louder.

Unless maybe they're talking about a box that takes a line-level audio output signal and amplifies it to a headphone-level signal (like what's built in to all portable audio players and most stand-alone amplifiers/computers/CD players - but presumably much higher quality kit - so you connect CD player's line out > headphone amp's line in and your headphones to the headphone amp's headphone-out socket.

yes thats how the headphone amp plugs into your player and your headphones.

I'm asking because I have the Shure 530PTH earbuds. and I keep hearing from people that having $500 earbuds are pointless if you don't have a Headphone Amp for them.
