Dumb question? 3G vs Edge

I live in a rural area with barely adequate AT&T and Edge coverage. There is no 3G coverage anywhere nearby. Is the 3G network totally separate or can a 3G phone access Edge? If not, I can stay with my 1st generation iPhones for quite a while.

Yes, a 3G iPhone will still be able to connect to EDGE just like the first gen iPhone (minus the 3G)
