The 3G iPod didn't have a lit wheel wither. Only the touch buttons, set separately from the wheel, were lit up. With the 4G iPod, the buttons are on the click wheel and thus easier to locate, eliminating the need for lighted buttons. With the click wheel on my mini, I've never felt the need for a lit wheel when using it in the dark, so I'm sure it'll be that way with the 4G.

You have to also consider that having illumination takes more battary power. And like said, you don't really need lighted buttons since the button layout is very simple.
