O.K., I'm fairly new into my mac. Today I have been searching for a utility to wipe free space on my macbook. I'm looking for something open source/freeware. When I was using Windoze I used Eraser by Heide. I can't find a thing out there. Oh, and I've done a search here in the forums and after looking through multiple pages I haven't found anything that meets my needs. Sorry. I'm pretty frustrated. And pardon my ignorance in all things Mac.

Do you know about Disk Utility? It's already on your Mac, and enables you to erase, format, partition, and many other things.

It's in your Utilities folder, which is inside your Applications folder.

If you go to disk utility and select the partition you want to erase and go to "erase" the only button available will be "erase free space"

You can erase the whole hard drive but that removes the OS also.

You can also erase the free space using various security levels.

Keep in mind a 7-pass or 30-pass erase free space takes a LONG,LONG time.

Overnight long.

At least.

If you have a 500MB-1TB hard drive.
